Secretary of State Olcott yesterday afternoon re ceived a letter from Justice Charles E. Hughes, in which the latter pro tests lagainst ftiis name 'being placed on the ballot as a candidate for the Republican nomination for president. Prior to receiving the letter the secre tary has received a telegram to the same effect. After the receipt of the telegram the Hughes supporters in itiated mandamus proceedings to com pel the secretary to put Justice Hughes' name on the ballot, and the case is now pending in the supreme court.
