Woman" of the Fox Film company, in a communication sent to Mayor Puchta, Rev. John F. Herjjet and Phil Herget of the Catholic Federation, all of Cincinnati. The letter is ,the re sult of protests recently made to ths city officials by ministers against the showing of one of her pictures. "I cannot conceive why my appear ances in pictures in the Cincinnati theaters could give grounds for the protests now being published in dis patches from Cincinnati," writes the screen star. "Every mother, every minister, every person with tihe well being of the younger element of Cin cinnati owes me gratitude for what I have accomplished through these pictures. A Selig Red Seal play thronged with heart-throbs and thrills at the Arcade tonight and tomorrow. any definite jjr direct and consequen tial manner, is regarded by the Gov ernment scientists as Quite imnossible. j Solar phenomena of the kind described do not have any direct influence upon the weather at any particular time or place, nd can not be miade the basis i of any forecasts whatever. . The alleged discovery is regarded as only one of a number of similar schemes which (are continually being put forward. In -some cases the advo cates of these schemes claim that they can forecast -the weather for weeks or months in advance, and in others they state that they have found means of producing rain artificially, of pre venting hail and in other way3 inter fering with and controlling atmospher is phenomena. These pretensions meet with a certain credence because there are a number of 'people who htill clin to the ancient belief in the influence of the moon on the growth and devel opment of crops, and to the idea that tho weather conditions depend upon planetary nnd astrological combina. tions. In . consequenco the 'Weather Bureau has been called upon from time to time to caution the public against putting faith in these so-called discoveries. I The U. S. Weaher Bureau itself is the authorized agency of the Govern ment; io coiiecc ncteoroiogicai ooser vations and make -and issue weather forecasts and warnings. Weather Bureau stated today that in the opinion of the bureau a new system of long-range weather forecasting, which has been widely discussed recently, was quite fallacious. The new system is said to be based upon the spottedness of the sun and ruts and shafts of solar rad iation. In the opinion of the Weather Bureau it belongs in the sumo class with other methods of flongrango weather forecasting based upon lunar, planetary, magnetic, and astrological considerations. None of these systems, it is said, has any scientific value. During it-he past fow years the Weather Binea-i has received full specifications -co - -ning nil the es s.inf.iiil details rl ... , particular, sys tem. The alleged discovery is, thero foi, fully known to tho Weather Bu reau and has been carefully studied and examined by its scientific staff. Moreover, other scientists of interna tional reputation now connected with tho strongest institutions of the world ergngerl in astronomical research, and conducting investigations into solar and terrestrial physics, have also pas sed upon these theories. These author ities are in accord that the deductions nnd conclusions drawn from the solar conditions on which the new system is based are unwarranted. When the disk of the sun is minute ly examined with powerful telescopes, or when it is photographed with the aid of the powerful spoctroheliogrr.ph the surface presents a characteristic spotted appearance which undergoes slight changes from day to day, and greater changes with longer intervals of time, depending upon well-known rotation of tho sun upon its nxij and tho periodic recurrence of the snnspot maxima and minima. Those and cer tain well-known related phenomena are now put forwnrd as the basis of n new science which will make possible forecasts of tho wenthor far ia ad vance Tlmt these features of solar activity, however, octunlly should con trol and determine the daily changes and flequence of weather conditions in (Elgin Recorder.) Concern ing plans now tentatively drafted, Rev. Gibbs said today: "Plans are being made by the min isterial association .to mark Holy Week in a striking and especial man ner. The theatre service on Good Friday by the courtesy of manager null, will again be reld in Sherry's theatre. This proved generally ac ceptable Isst year and will be repeated niter much the same order, though the subjects of tflie addresses will be different, but in keeping with the great topic of the day. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Holy Week noonday services of twenty minute duration, with the consent of the authorities, will be held at the railroad stoops and the Palmer mill. These are to lead up to the Good Friday service. The merchants of the city will he respectfully requested to close, as they did last year, their stores and offices, between ndfn and three o'clock on Good Friday More particulars will be announced later. A hearty, willing co-operation is earnestly hoped for, on the part of all."
