Cove people ore saddened by the sud
den death of Mrs. Vina Payne, on Fri
liay evening, at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. A. O. Huntley. Mrs.
layne was a pioneer "resident of this
section and was .loved by all. She
leaves two daughters, Mrs. A. 0.
Huntley nd Mrs. T. W. Conklin, be
sides other (relatives and hosts of
friends. The funeral was Ihleld at the
family home Monday afternoon, Rev.
C L. Clark of iLa Grande, officiating,
and a large concourse of sorrowing
people followed the remains to Cove
cemetery, where interment) Itook place.

"Grandma" Keefer passed away at
her home on March 18. Funeral was
keld at the L. D. S.hurch on Sun
day afternoon and interment took
place in Cove cemetery.
H. L. Becker sold his driving team
to Mr. De Long. The team has won
many blue ribbons at the Union Stock
Show.
Mrs. E. W. Borkgren is visiting at
the T. B. Johnson homo in La Grande.
Geo. Baker has just returned from
a two weeks' visit to Ms son Roy and
family at Enterprise.
"Grandma" Lane is on the sick list
this week. - -.
Rev. LaRee, an evangalist has been
nolding meetings in the Baptist chilrch
for two weeeks.
The Ladies' Aid Society held a dime
social at Mrs. O. T. Severs yesterday.
Another car of fiat hogs was ship
ped from here last Saturday by T. B.
Johnson, the local buyer.

ELGIN COLONY MIGRATES
Catlow Valley Draws Group of People
From the North End
The Elgin Recorder says that a
colony of Elgin people, consisting of
10 members expect to leave the fore
pant of next week for Catlow valley,
Harney countv. to establish rexufonra
on homestead claims. Those who will
comprise the party are Mr. and Mrs.
Roy Flexer, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Mc
Callister, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Cum
mins, Alvin Ohms, Cecil Huffman
and Otto Klinghammer. All will
make the trip overland and the Dartv
win leave raonaay or j-uesday, weath
er permitting. All the male members
have filed homestead applications
there or will at the time of their ar
rival, except McCallister, who may file
under the desert land adt. .
Hugo ond Reinhlold Klinghammer
have also made homestead entries in
that section but will not establish
their residence until later.
Catlo.w valley is situated close to
the .Steens Mrs., Beckley ibemg the
closest postoffice to the land upon
which the Elgin people will move.
All who will make the trip are woll
known people in Elgin and their many
friends wish them success in their
new location.
DANCE BAN EFFECTIVE
Few Attempts To Comply With the
Stringent Dancing Rules in Elgin
Elgin, Marchl 31. Elgin, like many
other cities, has felt the sting of danc
ing ban measures. The last dance giv
en in Elgin was in honor of St. Pat
rick, March 17th, which ds la long,
long time for many who enjoy doing
the two-step, waltz, turkey trot and
a few of the other new f angled danc
ing stunlts. The new ordinance pass
ed at the lasf Bession of the city coun
cil and which went into effect five
days after posting, placed a ban on
all but the old fashioned dances, and
placed dance halls and the managers
thereof under close restrictions and
as yet no one has 'secured a license
for that purpose. That the feet and
footsies of a lot are fairly itching
to just get a chance at even a duex
temps or a lively two-step is whisp
ered about.
The Elgin Concert Band is con
sidering tihlc proposition of leasing
Rex Hall and in that event dances will
be resumed at an early date.

Proper Solution To Be Used In Spray

Up to the present time 1 have been
recommending the use of bichloride of
mercury at the rate of one part to
one thousand of water as the best
solution to use in combating our po
tato disease. It is the most effective
and should be used in preference to
any other, so far as practical. But
some times cost price, makes a cheapr
er substance advisable. War condi
tions have in this case been respon
sible for a rapid rise in the price of
this chemical. It has been steadily
advancing until at the present time
we find it practically doubled in valuu.
This being the case, I believe many of
you would not feel as though you
could afford to use it on a large scale,
so lam recommending the next best
remedy. Thatls. ordinary formalde
hyde, the same as you use to treat
grain for smut, used at the rate of
one pint to 30 gallons of water.
'Soak seed for two hours, dry, cut up
as usual. In using be careful and
measure both water and chemiaal, as
you can make the solution too strontr
and injure the seed. Formaldehyde
alt the present time costs about 40
cents a pint or $2.25 n gallon, thus
making your solution cost you about
cent a gallon. ' .
Spraying Fruit Trees
To successfully snray fruit trees of
any kind we must know what we are
sprayincr far in the first nlace. Sec
ondly, we must know when the prop
er time arrives to do this spraying.
We cannot spTay and expect results
if we spray whenever we have time
or nothing else to do. Thirdly, and
fully as important, wo must use the
right spray for Ithe insect or disease
we are trying to combat.
It as not yet too late to apply the
winter sprays. Lime sulphur, one
part to itweive ot water wntn oiacK
leaf 40, one part to 900 parts of the
oife to twelve lime Sulphur solution, if
applied just as the apple buds begin
to swell, will control the aphis qurte
well and also the scale insects. If
you have no aphis, leave out the Black
leaf, and apply the .spray airy time
before the leaves come out. , This
strength will also .be of value. ThiB
spraying gooseberries and fcurrants
before they leaf out. ' ,
Dime Sulphur, one part to 30 of
water, is used for apple scab; the
time flower buds jn the cluster be
gin to spread and shew color; second,
just after the petals begin to fall;
third, ten days to two weeks later.; At
the time of the second scab spray, add
two pounds of arsenate of lead to
every 50 gallons of the Lime Sul
phur solution, thus you will be com
bating both Codlin moth (apple worm)
and scab at the same time, instead of
making two sprayings. These direc
tions hold for ithe pear also.
Lime sulphur, one part to fifteen of
water, applied just before or las the
peaclt buds begin to swell, but before
they show any green, will control the
Peach Lear Curt.
You can make., your owa lime sul
phur solution as follows: ,
Sulphur, 'best finely ground,
one sack ... ... 100 lbs.
Lime, best grade, unslacked. 60 lbs.
Water, sufficient to make ... 50 gal.
Slack the lime, mix in a thin paste
with a little water, add to it the lime.

constantly. Allow to settle, drain off
the clear amber liquid. This may be
stored for future use. When using di
