Royal Gwent Welsh Singers Will Be
Attraction At M. E. Church
La Grande ia to hear the Royal
Gwent Welsh singers of 20 men's
voices, that splendid organization be
ing booked ihtere April 6th.
Preliminary announcements of this
musical number have been received in
La Grande. '
The fame of Welsh choral sinc-ine
became world wide, when in 1872 a
mixed choir consisting mainly of
Welsh village folk, under the leader
ship of Caradog (Griffith RWys Jones)
won the Crystal Palace Company's
$5,500 challenge trophy and a cash
prize of $500. This fame was en
hanced in the following year, when
the same dbbir under the same lead
er again won the trophy, beating the
London choir, known then as the Paris
Prize Choir, under the leadership of
Mh Proudm.in. The sons of the prin
cipality have ever since maintained
-the fame and ever enhanced the
standard established and set by the
Crystal Palace victories.
Of all the Welsh Musical organiza
tions, the Royal Gwent Welsh Sing
ers lias been the first and foremost,
not only to maintain the fame, but
to set a standard to Welsh or any
other choral singing that has never
yet been excelled.
The visits of the Royal Gwent
Welsh Singers is 'by no means a new
venture. Indeed, it is now a matter
of history. Americans were first
thrilled by these singers from the
land of song as early as 1893, when
two Welsh choruses from Wales won
first Txrizes at the World's Fair, Chi
cago. The Royal Welsh Gwent Sing
ers stands and sings before the
world itoday as the unsurpassed .or
ganization of its kind, and, incident
ally, as the standard bearelr through
all lands of the superiority of the
Welsh nation as a nation of singers.

the Susan B. Anthony suffrage
amendment to the federal constitu
tion, which Representative Carlin of
Virginia dubs "Cock Robin," is dead
or alive.

Carlin's succint comment recently aa
he emerged from a sub-committee
meeting of the House Judiciary com
mittee, which was. to decide whether
"Cock Robin" should fly on through
the halls of Congress to "possible vic
tory, or die at the hands of the sub
committee's "bow and arrow".

both for and against bonding Union
County to build hard surface roads,
and I want you to know that I am op
posed to the bonding idea. I believe
the people of this county will de
feat such a movement by a large ma

A Quarter's Worth

Observer: Have read with extreme
satisfaction your comment on articlo
favoring the bonding of Union County
for ihiard surface roads. Your state
ments are unanswerable.
Now. it may foe that I am
one of the "moss covered posts.'" I
am one of those 53 year settlers cf
Cove who built one of the besit 160
acre farms in the county.
If this bonding issue comes up be
fore the people at the coming elect
ion rt will be 'badly defeated. 1 am
one of those that is opposed to any
kind of county indebtedness, bonded
or otherwise. Let me do a little fig
uring. A demand is made for $400,-
000 to hard surface thirty miles of
road. I believe there is more than
1000 miles of road in Union county.
Now, to surface all roads alike would
require something like 20 million
dollars. 'But to save the face of the
question (the laterals are to have the
black dirt roads. Let us see how this
works. A farmer who lives on a
ten mile dirt road will have to mill
his load over a mud road as it is to
day: Union county has good roads
during the summer and fall, and most
of tho winter. The heavy hauling is
done in the fall when the roads are
good.
In conclusion let me say, 1 am 76
years old and very pro una to be one
of those "posta."

Superintendent '

Rfchjards, a sdnior in animal hus
bandry at O. A. C, has been appoint
ed superintendent of tflio college live
stock fairtm. Mr. Richards was a
member of the stock-judging team at
the Portland and Lewiston livestock
shows. He is also president of thd
Wlithycombe club of which he was
organizer, and business manager of
the Oregon Countryman. He is re
garded by Professor Potter, head of
strong man with good executive abil
ity and initiative. The duties of the
office are many, including handling
of the farm, buying and selling live-
stocK and leed and aftecting a new
organization of form work.

Bill is thin and nerve-racked, and hts
expression is that of a hurried crea
ture. IBut his fellow-citizens, Will

Abner Soles, the shoe dehlor; Peter
Hacks, the butcher and Messrs Shel
ves and Spyce, who run the Joyville
grocery are stout and hearty and
comfortable.
If city men took an liour at noon to
eat and rest, the tresultrng commercial

When Adam first fell into the wat
er the human race took a step far
ward. Civilization and bath tubs now
hand in hand. Authorities may vary
in discussing the merits of the hot
bath, the tepid bath and the. cold bath,
but they all agree in the abstract that
bathing is necessary to good health
and a prime promoter of self respect.
The removal from the skin of the ac
cumulation of refuse matter is the
primary reason for the bath. It is
essential to good health that the skm
be kept in proper condition, as it auto
maticauy regulates the heat of the
body, permitting it to cool off when it
becomes too warm and keeping heat
in when it becomes too cold. It as
sists the lungs and kidneys in the dis
posal of refuse matter. When the
skim sweats it assests the kidneys,

spires and helps the lungs. A bath
should not be taken too near meal
time. There is a normal attraction
of the blood toward the stomach aft
er eating; any interference with this

Boys 'In Their Teens In Army
Douglas, Ariz., March'- 19. Five
hundred troops of the de facto gov
ernment, mostly boys of from four
teen to eiirhteen years old, arrived
at Agua Prieta, opposite here today.
They began training preparatory to
proceeding to Eastern Sonora, where
they will iramforce thk garrison
guarding the mountain passes of San
Luis, rulmto, .'Utitas and Dolores
which lead into Chihuahua. Mexican
officials said most of the boys were
deserters from Villa.
The situation in Sonora is well in
hand, Gen. P. Elias Calles, Military
Governor, announced today.
