An Arerican surgeon has been put
at the head of hospital work in the
Department of the Seine end Oise. By
promoting Dr. Joseph Blake to a po
sition where he directs six military
hospitals in tihe important Paris di
vision, the French government not
only recognizes the skill and execu
tive ability of Dr. Blake, but pays to
the American surgical profession a
tribute of which wis nation may be
proud.
War asks of doctors more than
skill. It demands thorough organiza
tion and team work for the colossal
tiisks it imposes. The handling of
thousands of wounded, the performing
of countless operations, the need for
tile utmost economy or time, strengtn
and material in order that no suffer
er shall be neglected these things
call for more than willingness and pro
fjoiency on the part of individual
surgeons. Perfect system and obedi
ence are as necessary as in the army
itself.
