Last year the total importations on the coast were 55,000,000 bags. There is a very small carry-over stock from last year, ' if further purchases of bags will ue necessary or other methods of handling grain provided, even with a smaller crop, which it is now thought may be 25 per cent less than that of 1915. . iln tthie meantime, practically no business is passing in the oan mur ket. Buyers in th country oie hold ing back and sellers are not tiying to force business. The nominal UO' tation of Walla Walla is 15 cents. No local bags are on sale, but that is the estimated cost of laying them down from Seattle or sovie other center. There has been much interest in ttie trade in the affairs of the steamer King Malcolm. The vessels was char tered to 'taring 32,000,000 yards of bur lap to this coast to be made into bags. Then the British Authorities requisi tioned her at Calcutta and ordered tho cancellation of the charter, on' the grounds that steamer of that siito should not be sent so far away from the sphere of possible military needs. As the King Malcolm had begun load ing, however, the cancellation order was later rescinded and she will be allowed to proceed. It is surmised that'tfter she discharges her burlap at San Francisco she will load with a munition cargo for the Orient. The 'British authorities not only con trol the shipments of bags and burlap out of Calcutta, but also dictate tnft ports to which the cargoes shall go. On this subject the New York Journ al of Commerce says: "Bag manufacturers who Jilave large interests in the Northwest are much concerned regarding the elimination of Seattle as a port of entry for bur lap under : the tentative importing plan that is now before the British authorities for approval. Sari Fran cisco has been designated as the port on the west coast through which bur lap may come under the importing arrangements in its present form.
