R., of the church of The Holy Redeemer, Portland, will open a mission in the church of Our Lady of the Valley at the 10:80 o'clock mass tomorrow. Father Towers is noted throughout the Northwest for his ability as a pulpit orator.. Last night he was the principal speaker at the annual cele bration of -the Ancient Order of Hiber nians in Portland. The mission lectures wall be given every evening during the coming week at 7:30. SHANGHAIED A former resident of La Grande whose mysterious disappearance about twenty years ago caused much com ment and uneasiness has been heard from and the cause of his departure which was considered shady a,t. the time has been explained. That man was A.. W. Cuthbert and he now lives in Hornbrook, California. . Mr. Cuth be:t was formerly a section boss and for a while yardmaster at La Grande. He built a residence on the western comer of what is now the site of the federal building. This house passed through several ownerships and was finally removed by J. D. McKennon to Second street, where it now stands. Cuthbert; opened a store at Kamela and made t trip to Portland at which time he was reputed to have $2000 cash with him for' paying bills and buying more goods. He ran against (She sailors quarters in Portland and accepted the proffer of a social drink. When he came to himself he was on the briny deep a clear case of being shanghaied and he did not see dry land again until he was put off the vessel in Scotland. In the meantime the report spread that he had abscond ed. His fcvmily, consisting of a wife aid three sons, were forced to share the common belief and it was nearly a year before they, were re-united. With his means gone and his store at Kamela taken over by creditors Ihe wont to California and for many yeaa-s conducted a shoo repair, chop at Horn- brock. .This fact has been known to a few of Lil Grande people who hap pened to see him at the California town 'and among, them was '. Jack Thatcher, the railroad engineer who makes a trip to California every win ter. All the family are, alive and well. One or two of the sons are married and are in raHroad work in California. Mr. and Mrs. Cuthbert were very sociable people and frequently enter tained the young folks of La Grande with dances at their home. His vol untary disappearance at , the time could hardly be given credence, and there re'few people of La Grande who have hitherto been acquainted with the facts of Mr. Cuthbert's ill- fated trip to Portland. V , 'lVenty-Four Years Ago, ' ;A. T. Merwin, a "republican aspirant for the office of sheriff was in La Grande this week. How ever, it proved to be a wonderful example of tlhe quality and stability of the Willard Storage Battery. According sito displaljches from Houston, a local resident, Mr. Ike Levin, Was crossing on the ferry with his machine, on a duck hunting trip. Somebody forgot to tie the boat at the other side, and wjien Levin started his motor preparatory to driving off, the power from the rear wheels kicked the boat (backward and sent the ma chine forward into the waiter. Levin jumped, but the car sank into 12 feet of water. It w&s vary early in the morning and Levin had hid lights burning. As the car sank, the water for long distance took on a shimmery yellow look that located the machine's posi tion when they came to remove it, The water and lair tight construc tion of the battery prevented all moisture from entering the cells and kept the lights burning brightly from Sunday morning until Monday night, when the car was towed ashore.
