Last Friday the Latin classes gave
a. dinner truly Roman ih every re
spect. 'It was much' like the one of
last year, varying only in minor de
tails. The triclinium , (the unitiated
wou dldoubtless call it a dining room)
was decorated with palms, and stream
ers of Tyrian purple; and bright with
the light of many . candles. The
guests, members of the upper classes,
arrayed in white togas and much be
decked with jewelry, reclined luxuri
ously on couches covered with robes
and pillows. They were served by
members of the lower classes, who as
slayes, wore short, scant tunics of
dark brown cloth. ; v
After the guests had been shown
to their places by the homenclator
and had been relieved of their sand
als by slaves, water was passed for
their hands. Next the host invoked
the God, Bacchus, whose ivy-wreathed
Statute stood in the center of . the
table; then followed the dinner, the
viands, manner of serving and every
thing being strictly in keeping with
the customs of high class 'Romans of
the early Empire. Some unique feat
ures were: The passing of -water for
the hands at the end of each course,
this being necessitated by the lack of
all eating utensils except fingers; the
offering to .the household Gods before
the last course; and the drinking.bout
with which the. dinner closed. Al
though nothing more inebriating than

known to the Romans, was allowed; j
hence, tea, coffee, potatoes, tomatoes,
butter and sugar were debarred, but
no one missed them..
The menu cards were in Latin but

High School Notes '
A lecture upon food and table man

ner.
The two divisions of Juniors under
the teachers, Miss Smith and Mr. Mc
Intosh, contested in spelling Monday
afternoon. - When the bell rang seven
of Miss Smith's' and six of Mr. Mc
intosh's class were standing. They
will probably finish the contest Fri
day. , .'."
During the ' absence of Mr. Mc
Neill, Mr. Girdler and Mr. Henline
are substituting for him while Mr.
Olsan is taking some of Mr. Henline's
work. ' ., . '
The conclusion of school being so
near at hand many of the social func
tions are being prepared for that
time, such as the Junior-Senior ban
quet and the Senior play.'
Carolyn Palmer's division of Tilli
cum girls are sending invitations to
the various teachers and members of
the Society which read:
"If to honor St. Pat ye've) a mind
And to have a rale good Oirish time;
On March sixteenth, in the H. S. gym
Do be comin' 'fore the light grows
dim."
The girls will furnish music and
refreshments and play games. They
will no doubt have a "rale Oirish good

new model confidence game,' worked
out especially for fraternity men, has
arrived. Although it is very simple,
it is risky work. The opera toir poses
as a fraternity brother and obtains a
'Ibrotherly loan" from his victim, usu
ally as much as he can get.
Horace B. Reed, an Alpha. Tau
Omega man, was working in his of
fice late when a shaggy looking in
dividual, entered and became friend
ly. The person, who introduced him
self as Jackson Reynolds, of Oakland,
Cal., was a "bvatti" in Reed's opinion.
Reed wondered why and whence came
all the friendliness, until the man,
seeing the pin on Reed's vest, ex
claimed, "Why, H'm a member of your
fraternity."
'What fraternity ?" asked Reed.
"Your fraternity," parried tfie man,
looking closely at the pin', 'Vne Geeks."
Oh, you mean the Geks," replied
Reed, thinking of the G. E. K's. the
Gamma Etta Kappa Fraternity, a high
school organization. .
"Yes, said the man.
Reed then explained that the had
mistaken his pin, as they are similar,
both being Maltese crosses need,
however,, knew the "Geks" well and
didn't like to refuse to aid one. Reed
excused Wimself and phoned B. K.
Wolfe, grand recorder to look in the
catalogue for a Jackson Reynolds in
the Oakland chapter. The name was
there, and Reed was almost convinced.
The man then came to the point,
saying 'he was in financial difficulties
land asked Reed to telegraph his par
ents at 8101 Summit avenue, Oakland,
for car fare to return borne. Reed
agreed, for the story caitried convic
tion, and told the man to call for the
money, which amounted to ' nearly
$100.
The man arrived on time, but no

to phone to Wolfe again, and in their
absence the man fled. He did' not
wait for the elevators, but rushed
down four flights of stairs and out
into the street, where he disappeared.
