broiling rays of the Lone Star sun
the Giants of John McGraw are
pounding down the stretch of their
ante-season siege of preparation.
Rookies and regulars alikeare toss
ing that old ball and swatting its
nose with enthusiasm worthy of a bet
ter cause, to-wit, a regulur series
with averages and umpires and other
mid-season trimmings. The weather
man, burring a few periods of aberra
tion, has been a right reasonable sort
of cuss to the Giants and as a result
there has been day after day of sum
mer weather through which the clan
McGraw pushed itself into form. Mc
Graw has ten pitchers on the ground,
including Christy Mathewson, Jeff
Tesreau and Pollly Perritt of last
year's hurling force and Anderson,
the Federal League star whose show
ing in training has been one ' of the
most encouraging features of the
camp seuson. Then there are Benton,
Schauer, Schrupp, Stroud, Palmera,
the Cuban and Kramer who look
mighty good to the Crown Prince of
Mister Coogan's precipice. If Mc
Graw's pitchers live up to his expec
tatioons the season will cause him
comparatively little worry. Tho rest
of the team is big enough to be a cer
tain quantity. Behind the bat Mc
Graw has Rariden and Dooin to nn
chor tho staff. There are six catchers
altogether but of course it is to be
expected some of this umber will be
out of the big leagues by tho time
the season opens. The player limit
compels McGra wto wield the pruning
knife, hard though ti may be to part
with the promising serfs performing
daily in the training games.
Burns, Rousch the ex-Fed and Kel
ley are in the Giants' flock of outer
fielders, consisting of 12 men. Tho
infield is a grizzled affair in its per
sonnel. Merkle, Doyle, Fletchor and
Lobert have been shaving for many
summers and can't remember how to
blush when maiden fair say "there
ho goes." Rodriguez and Hunter are
first busomen and Brainerd is a vet
eran Infielder. Elsh, Schopner and
Martin are three young bloods try
ing to pry open a place in the infield.
