A potential res uer received similar attention from the insulted canine, then someone sneaked up while the bulldog's atten tion was engaged, grasped him firm 'ly by the collar and threw him out . the door. .The injured were taken to the em "ergency hospital, the basketball game was resumed and for a time "all went 'merry as a marriage bol!.",'The dog stood outside the door, and the nil rity within must have added to the jam of .his wounded dignity. The sight of the (bounding ball and its possibilities for ifun momentarily distracted his mind '.from revenge. He charged after the bail and with his nose and paws sent lit out of bounds. Then, the athletes attacked in force. A forward tried to kick him in the " head, and the dog bita chunk out of Jlis stocking. But the opposing num 'bers were too great, and the fighting Dunaog was heaved from the gymnas ium, unwept, unhonored and unsung. -mis only satisfaction must have been that it took ten husky athletes to van quish him. Kid McCoy and Mrs. Kid McCoy are -helping him. They are just now rubbing elbows with society folk idling at Palm Beach. At Palm Beach he is Mr. Geary Steffen of San Francisco, Kid McCoy has, of course, been a favorite of fashion for many years. At Palm Be-ieh he is Mr. Norman Selby of. And Mack is doing little talking these days except to refer to his promise Inst year that he would make the Athletics another powerful pennant winning team. The team started south today. All last season, when the Athlet ics were trampled upon, kicked and mauled by every other team in the American league and during the win tor, Connie Mack spread a dragnet over all the minor leagues and col leges for (material and formulated plan for his now machine. Nobody knows how many unknowns Connie has under cover, but if his past constructive performances .may be taken as harbingers it is safe to predict the Athletics will finish a few notches higher than the cellar. With the "masked marvels" listed as an unknown quantity it would up pear that the Athletics are prepared in all departments except pitching and third base. If training camp coaching has the proper effect the Athletics mound- men will be greatly improved over -the men of 1915, Wyckoflf, Joe Bush and Bressler are figured as anchor men. Last season Wyckoff improved amaz ingly and around him it is believed Mack will build his staff. In addition the Maekmen's pilot has Nabors and Meyers, who toward the end of last season demonstrated that they were rapidly getting their stride. The receiving end of the game is expected to be handled largely by Wally Schang . and McAvoy. Young Perkins can also be counted on to do a little catching. This boy, according to' his team mates, is a coiner. Those who saw him work in the North Caro lina League feel certain that this sea son will develop him greatly. Mack is said practically to have de cided that Jimmie Walsh will be the I regular left fielder, with Oldring in center and Stunk in right. Davies, however fits well in left field and it would not cause great surprise if he wore gallivanting around that sec tion. ' I Oldring, as a result of his "retire ment" is in great shape. Rube spent j his vacation on his farm and appears i to be quite capablo of playing in his I li)13 and 1014 style. The infield problem will probably cause Mack a few headaches. Third base is still a great uncertainty and short-stop will require consideration. Although several new recruits are being tried out for the latter position it is possible Crane will be selected. Healy and Ritter are being imen- tioned for third. In Hitter. Mack thinks he has got a future star and looks for remarkable work from the youngster. Mclnnis is expected to be seen at first as usual and Malone probably will be service nt second in place of Larry Lajoie. (Rumors are circulating that Larry will be seen on another team.)
