Hughes, of the United States Sup reme Court, in an address the other night before the New York State bar association on "Somo Aspects of the Development of American 'Law," urg ed Americans to draw a lesson of "patriotism, vigor and self discipline" from the people of Europe. The justice declared that people of this country could not suppose that those who survive in Europe will not be strengthened by dicipline and sac rifice. "We are living at a time when men and women in a large part of the world are undergoing a dicipline un rivaled in its seventy and are ex- hibitng a heroism that has never been surpassed," he said. "Let it not be supposed that those who survive will lack the strength which such sacrifice and dicipline must give. "Let us not content ourselves with the comfortable thought of hardships we have escaped, but rather reflect upon the vigor, self discipline and pa triotic ardor which alone can make ns worthy of opportunity r able to use it."
