Phone Main 38. 4 4 MEASURES OF ECONOMY These are the times when railroads are obliged to adopt measures of econ omy for the regulation of rates and hours of employment, the advance in the price of materials and other items of operating and maintenance expen ses having forced them to look to sav ing through conversation. Instead of piling up old freigth cars and ap plying the torch, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad is trying the experi ment of reclaiming the lumber and metal Darts of worn-out equipment and utilizing this salvage in countless ways which unfold themselves in tne operation of a property of this size. Reclaimed lumber is resawed and planed until the outside defects are removed, then it is cut into smaller sizes and shipped from point to point over the road for use in repair work, in the erection of small buildings, platforms etc. The mechanical department esti mates that the saving effected by the dismantling of cars in this manner amounts to $20 a car, which reaches a big total when it is remembered that hundreds of cars go out of ser vice every year. When there is no immediate use for the reclaimed material it is stored, and it is estimated by an official of the road that from $50,000 to $75,000 should be saved. At least the man agement is so impressed with what the experiments have shown that a large reclamation plant has been es tablished at Zanesville, Ohio, where the old cars are collected and demol ished. Old piling and bridge timbers as well as ties nre treated with this economy medicine, and the useful' life of the lumber is thus prolonged,. From the savings of the Ohio plant the company recently constructed a fruit loading platform at Keyser, W. Va., 90 feet long, and enlarged the facili ties at a refrigerating plant at Cum berland Md, lengthrning it to 300 feet for the accomodation of ten cars at one time. At tho Zanesville plant considerable sawing machinery has been installed, so confident is the management of the road that the scheme will prove an importan economy. Ihis is used to cut bridge timbers into boards that can be used for floor ing in freight houses and other places where it is not important that tho material should be new. COUNTY COURT.
