A DANDY MIXTURE PROGRAM v wmmrnmm A WORD ON HATS AND HAT TRIMMINGS FOB SPRING New York, Feb. 5. The "drjessup" notion seems to have taken a strong hold oa us, one and all. Our shop windows present wonderful changes each day, and our Avenue has be come a veritable kaleidoscope of at tractively gowned and hatted women. Perhaps it is the opening of the new season with its suggestion of coming spring, although tb"- frost and snap of old winter still lingers, which cause us to look with more appreciative eyes than usual on the new offerings in frocks suits and hats. But leaving aside these flattering elements, there is really more of beauty and smart ness in this seasons styles than we have had for many year. Ostrich Trimming on Frocks Fur is still the smart trimming for all garments, and it promises to re-1 main in favor well into spring. There is already a hint here and there, how ever, that designers and manufac turers are tentatively reaching out for an attractive successor. In one of the smart shops the other morning a most attractive afternoon dress was displayed; it was made in Russian effect, was very simple, and sparingly ornamented, the only , trimming, in fact, being bands of ostrich in the same shade of blue as the dress, edg ing the high, standing collar, the cuffs and the lower edge of the blouse pep lum. The effect was pleasing and perfectly appropriate for the warmer weather. Trimmings for Spring Hats Whether ostrich as trimming for hats will be favored to any great de gree, is still a question; that it will be used considerably, as in the pasft season or two, for fancies, odd little stick-ups, balls, rossettes, and similar effects, on the chic small hats which are being introduced as first models for spring has already been con firmed. Many hand-made hatis are being shown this season. The new braids are mostly shiny; glace effects will predominate, although, one sees some effective dull-finished hemps and tagals. A new glace braid from Paris resembles nothing so much as' the scales of a fish, and it is appropriately flowersnamed "fish scale straw. Some flowers will be used on the new hats and quantities of ribbon. The new colors in millinery are generally speaking, black which is quite as strong as ever, geranium-pink, absin-polished-gold, mint-green, and baby chick; the last a charmingly sugges tive title. Among the attractive millinery no tionls being displayed in the shops, and worn at the southern 'esorts, are sots consisting of hat, handbag and col larette, and fashioned of faille, or the new soft lusr satins. One of t'.e mo. t attractive of these is deve loped in the new Callot, color, a soft shade of pinkish lavender. Tlw hat is very simple, a medium sailor turned sharply on the left side, having no contrasting trimming; the bag is of the same soft luster satin as the hnt, and the collarette, also of silk, is cord ed about an inch apart, and finishsd with long ribbon ends for tying. These sets are being made up in many colors and are unusually effective as a finishing touch on an afternoon frock of silk. Fashions in Handbags Now that so much attention is be ing given to details, and in conse quence we are all presenting a better groomed appearance than ever be fore, the handbag is being shown con siderable attention. Once upon a time it was considered for its useful quali ties alone. Now it lends an added touch of color or richness to- tailored suit and afternoon frock, and its ap propriateness for both must be con ' sidered. The voluminous bag of soft witorocco and like soft leathers in dark colorings, the black patent lea ther bag, lined with bright red or cream-colored moire silk, and enve lope purses, also lined with bright silks, are good form with tailored suits. There are some attractive nov elty striped leathers also being used with dark tailored suilts very effec tively. Antique brocades, Japanese embroiders, and dyed laces are fash ioned into effective and artistic bags for the afternoon gown. Several of the newest fashion fea tures are illustrated in the afterrioon frocks illustrating this letter; the cape-collar is one, the drop-shoulder and attractive sleeve is another. They do say that all is fair in love and War but it's been mighty hard for and heads are once more light The outlook for other dyestuffs how ever is very dark. The weather man has often predicted a white winter for us but now the Fashion man promises us a white summer white with a large dash of tan by way of variety. By way of getting the greatest amount of variety out of tan you can call it biege, ecru, string biscut sand and putty as it's intensity of tanness wanes or waxes. Forunately we aiready have such charming tan summer materials in natural pongee, shantung and rajah silks, to say nothing of natural lin ens, that to be thus limited for our Spring and Summer outfits threatens no real tribulation. Cotton voiles of rich J)iege color striped in the same toned cotton vel vet are most effective and the biege turbans of biscuit colored straw and ttlffeta and the high shoes with putty colored tops. ilf you remember we were caught in a sand storm of sand colored suits, hats and accessories last Spring, but this year's bisque hued crop promises less violence and more quiet effective ness. As befitting a neutral nation that other most neutral of tints', pearl grey, will also have its place in the mono tones of our most modern frocks. Of a necessity then the modern maid, de liberately going against the admoni tion of Mr. Omar to fling her winter garment of repentance aside for the tires of Spring will change instead her flame hued garb of Winter for the ashes of a new sartorial season. . .
