General News Items of HighftSchool Origin. The new semester began Monday and by the combined efforts of the teachers the whepl of routine is running regularly. The second edition of the Mimir will be issued Friday. Two new pupils have been enrolled this semester. "Jhey are: Esther Davis of Baker who entered as a sen ior and Marcus Roesch who entered as a sophomore from this city. Assembly was called Wednesday afternoon at which several announce ments were made. Estella Graybill and her division of the 'Tillicum girls will entertain the rest of the Tillicums Friday evening. This party is to welcome the incom-: ing girls. . Z' Albert Hushaw delivered a lecture on Hawaii which lasted from three un til four oclock Thursday afternoon. He illustrated with 120 lantern slides Series . of topographical features, volcanoes, " vegetation, public build ings and natives in costume. "22 at the home of Mrs. Mnry Over vton. Mrs. Hawk (nee Griffith) was ! born in Henderson county, Illinois, j in 1832, and was 84 years of age.. She ' crossed the plains in 1845 by ox team ; in a train of 40 families led by Cap : tain Absalom Heckleman. . Elder I Fisher and the Rev. H. Johnson were among the emigrants and preached on the journey. Mrs. Hawk lived in Oregon City until 1847 when the family came to Linn county and took up a donation land claim two miles south.of Brownsville. In June, 1S48, Pioneer of 1845 Is Dead. Brownsville, Ore., Jan. 26. Mist Sarah A. Hawk died here January she vns Tnnrripri tn Willifim Hawk, a nioneer from Indiana. . At the time j of the Whitman massacre Mr. Hawk i-volunteered and went to Eastern Oregon to fight the Indians. He was I one of the party that reburied the victims of that massacre after their . bodies had been dug up by wolves, i He also fought in the Rogue River ; war .under Captain James Blakeley. : His death occurred in 1901 at Fos sil, Or. Mrs. Hawk had 12 children, eight j sons and four daughters. Two sons, t George and Anderson, and - three daughters, . Mrs. Mary Marrow, of Pendleton; Mrs. Sadie Mulligan, of ' Coburg, and Mrs. Nancy Colbert, of Palouse City, Wash.: are still living. I There are 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at the First Presbyterian church Monday at 10 o'clock, the Rev. Mr. Koehlor officiat ing. McGrath of the Progressive national committee, that it has apportioned five dele gates to Oregon for the national con vention of the Progressive party. Two are to be elected at largo, and one from each congressional district. Monmouth, Ore., Jan. 26. -A meet ing of the executive committee of the eight educational institutions com prising the State Oratorical associa tion was held here, when delegates from all the schools were present and the president, Laura Bell, presided. A design tot a medal for the winner in the contest was agreed upon, as well as some changes in the consti tution, which Will be presented at the business meeting to be held on the day of the contest, the first Friday in March. The Student Body associa tion of the State Normal school Is making definite plans to take care of the various delegations at the con test as well as all visitors.
