ficient and Saves Several Rooms
Chemicals as a fire-fighting tool
was iriven the acid . . test yesterday
evening and found not wanting when
a stubborn blaze in the F. A. Epling
home at the head of Fourth street
was conquered without the use of wa
ter. Because chemicals alone were'
used, repapering will restore the
original worth and looks of all rooms
in the house save two. and a stairway
The fire had started spontaneously,
probably, and although Mrs. Fpling
smolled burning rags she aurioutcii
it to some discarded clothing she had
burned in the heater As a matter nf
fact clothing in a closet under the
stairway in the hall was responsible.
Finally she discovered smoke and
called the department. Shortly the
hallaw ywas a seething mass of
flames, and the explosion of - Rasas
blew open the front door and hallway
window the moment Firemen Mackey
and Sweifol approached to investigate
what, appeared to be a smouldering
fire. They escaped injury except for
some badly blistered hands. ,. ' . '
The, chemicals conquered ' the f fire
and of course did damage to wall
paper in other rooms. . The front
hallway was radly charred and sev
eral windows broken. The home wn-!

The Grain Bag Situation
It now appears that whether or not
they so desire, farmers of the valley
will have bulk grain handling'forced
upon them this year, eays the Walla
Walla Bulletin. Bags are scarce, and
almost unobtainable right now. Some
dealears say there will not be half
enough to contain the crop of the val
ley this year and that the greater part
of the wheat must be shipped in bulk.
There seems to be no real cause for
Igrief in tho situation, however, for it
will merely hasten the change from
bags to bulk. Farmers will have to
build bins and elevators because they
cannot get sacks; and they won't have
