Walla Walla Has Gloomy Reports on Visible Supply. Walla Walla, Jan. 21. Walla Walla faces a potato famine within a short time if the present cold weather con tinues, according to reports of local wholesale produce men this morninjr. The price has been rising steadily during the past week, and present in dications are for further movements upward. .Potatoes are being wholesaled today at $1.35 ner cwt. or $25 ver ton, but wholesale men say that they may be forced to quote higher prices at any time. So far the grocers have main tained a price of $1.50 per cwt retail, but it is probable a few more days will see 1his price advanced to $1.75. The retail price has (risen from $1.00 to $1.60 during the past two weeks, and produce men say they would not be surprised if the price would go over $2.00 retail within-the next two weeks. Potato shortage in the middle west and south and difficult transportation due to the cold weaher are given as the causes of the increase in price. The middle west and south have looked to the northwest this year to supply their potatoes, and largo quantities have been shipped to thoso localities during the fall and winter. The Yakima valley and he Willam ette valley 'have been called upon largely to supply the demand. The local situation is complicated by the fact that there was an unusu ally short crop here this year. Local wholesalers report that the entire Walla Walla crop is practically gone, and that thev have been importing from North Yakima and Portland for the past two months. Practically no potatoes have been stored in pits, they say. lieports from North Yakima today state that not over 3500 tons of po tatoes are unmarketed, and that ship ments are bcin.T made constantly r Chicago, Los Angeles, Texas and oth that it takes over 1000 tons to supply the Seattle market alone for one month it is seen how great the" short age may bo.
