Schilling's ' '1 Best OF LI 0 MISSIONARIES The Laymen's Missionary Conven tion of Oregon, to meet in Portland, February 13-16, and which is part of a nation-wide movemont to arouse the energies of Laymen of all evangelical churches in upwards of 80 of the lead ing centers of the country, will prove of importance to all the world. As the result of conventions held in other cities, there is much informa tion. At St. Louis, actual gifts to the work totaled upwards of $6000. Christ Episcopal church enrolled the larg est number of delegates (113) alt Cincinnati, and the Walnut Hills Baptist church enrolled its entire male membership 77. A member of the convention com mittee at Toledo requested that he be put in touch with his national de ' nominations! leaders, so that he and his wife might guarantee the support of at least five missionaries. The ambition of Los Angeles is to secure 5000 delegates. From Minneap olis comes the information that the Lutherans are making preparations for the Convention there to a greater extent than in any other city. vrutflKie i Manchester, flew Hasp shire, 00 towns were represented at the convention thore by 426 delegates more a.nan one-thiM the total regis tration. "Brose and Duller" that Is, porrldKe and butter Is an old Scotch tune of which Prince Charles, afterward Charles II., was very fond. The laird of Cockpen when Charles was at Tho Hague played the air for the prince the last thins at night and the ttrt thing In the morning. On returning to Scotland after the restoration the laird found bis estate bad been forfeited for bis attachment to the royal cause, and, sad to relate. Charles, forgetful of Cockpen's services, refused to interest himself In his faithful follower's peti tion to have it returned to biro and oven refused bun an audience. Tbe laird, with the pertinacity of his race, resolved to achieve by stratagem what be could not by direct uppeaL While In London Cockpen formed an Intimate scqnalntanceshlp with the or ganist of tbe Cliupel Royal and pre vailed on him to allow htm to act as bis substitute at n service at which tbe king was to be present. Obtaining his consent, he played tbe regular tunes for the service. Wbeu dismissal time cumo he played the king's old favorite melody, "Brose and Butter." , On bearing It Charles weuded bis way to tbe organ gallery, where be found his quondam courtier, whom be greeted with a touch of tbe old famili arity, remarking, "Toil almost made me dance." Quick to seize the oppor tunity, the laird responded.. "1 could dance, too, if 1 had my lands back again." Charles' better nature awoko under tbe power of the music and the old memories it recalled, with tbe re sult tbnt the laird received bis own again. Edinburgh Scotsman. MEXICO CITY POLICE. Always Ready at Night to Answer a Clap of the Hands. In Mexico City eueh of the 5,000 po lice who won for it the reputation of the most thoroughly patrolled city in tho world carries a lantern underneath his capo. After a certain hour, when traffic has virtually ceased, the police men put their lanterns in the middle of the roadways at the Intersections of tho streets, Then they go luto the nearest door way, sit (town und prepare to spend the rest of the night at their ease. If you want a policeman you simply step out on the sidewalk and clap your hands. Immediately with tbe sudden ness of genii one appears from either aide. Handclapplng, by tbe way, is tho universal method of attracting atten tion in Mexico. To Insure wakefulness on tbe part of the police any one who brings a lantern or a policeman's cs to the nearest police station gets SS. which is deducted from tbe negligent patrolman's monthly pay. . In some cities the system of "keeping tab'.' on policemen Is different ICvery hour the sergeant at the statioii goes to tbo door and blows his whistle. Tbe man on the nearest beat immediately responds. Number two follows, and so the whistle passes through tbe entire forco and comes back to the station. If one whistle is missing the man who has tbo preceding beat investigates and reports at headquarters. Tbo speed witb which tbo hour can be blown and tho watchfulness of the force deter mined is astonishing. Youth's Com panion. The Czar ball. One of tho beat known bolls In the world has, strange to say, never been rung that known ns tho Czar Kolokol, or tho cznr bell. This bell Is said to be tho largest anywhere. Finally, after more than a hundred years of oblivion, It wns raised and placed In a public sn.ua ro In Moscow, where It now stands.
