Pilot Rock Junction to Employ About
SO Mechanics.
Problems and conditions at Pilot
Rock Junction, the new passenger en
gine terminal, are being met as they
come up. Many points along the line
are contributing toward the person
nel of the permanent crews required
to handle the work there. About SO
machinists and boiler makers are to
be employed there, and these are tak
en from Umatilla, Pendleton chiefly.
One machinist and a boilermaker goea
from here.
Box cars have been fitted up to
house employes at the terminal. A
big barn has been fitted up into a
rooming and boarding house, and a
few substantial residences are con
templated by employes especially.
While crude the facilities are said to
be comfortable and keep the men
warm and well fed.
Chief Hostler Joe Baker has been
sent to Pilot Rock while Del Jackson
is laid tip from the exposure suffered
a day or two ago when he tumbled in
to the cinder pit and lay exposed to
the cold for a number of hours.

No. 17, as well as other west-bound
trains, are hoary monsters when they
pull into La Grande. Running gears
are invariably solidly covered with
ice and snow and it requires consid
erable time to get the steam going
when they keep steam up in the
coaches and pullmans.

Sheriff Closes Confectionery.
Silverton, Or., Jn. (18. Sheriff
William Esch of Salem closed the
Palm confectionery on Saturday ' on
behalf of creditors. Ben Rosheim,
the proprietor, was no in the city
when the place was closed up. The
business was conducted in the name
of Mrs. Ben Rosheim. ' -'
University Regents in Session.
Eugene, Jan. 18. The board of
regents of the University of Oregon
met today in Johnson hall for Itheir
regular first semester meeting. Rob
ert S. Bean, president of the board,
presided. Reports were read by
President P. L. Campbell on the con
dition of the institution and ithe bud
get for the coming year was pre
sented. Ellis F. Lawrence, of Port
land, and head of the school of archi
tecture, presented tentative sketches
for the proposed addition to the
group of buildings on the campus. The
building, it is planned, will house the
departments of law, architecture and

Challenge Issued. i
In a challenge issued to other tire
manufacturers, the. B. K. Goodrich
company of Akron, Ohio, declared
itself willing to throw open its books
and records to an independent audit
company if oner companies will do
the same, that the Goodrich company
may prove it manufactures more au
tomobile and truck tires combined
than any other concern in America
The challenge states that the Good
rich company manufactured in th
lairt year mare than 2,050,000 tires.
The formal wording of the chal
lenge follows:
"To any rubber or tire manufactur
ing concern which claims production
and sale of as many auto and truck
.tires combined (by any or all of its
United States factories) as were pro
duced and sold by the Akron, Ohio,
factory of the B. F. Goodrich com
pany during the latest fiscal year of
each we extend this challenge.
"We will throw open our books and
records of tire manufacture and sale
to a fair and impartial audit, super
vised by a committee of Ithree to be
mutually agreed upon, provided the
competing tire concern . or concerns
will do the same.
"W,e will abide by the result of that
audit, and agree that all rubber or
tii concerns who are parties thereto
be free to publish the certified findings
of that audit as to the comparative
volume of each company's combined
auto and truck tire production and
sale.
"We confine the audit to the "pror
duction and salo of auto and truck
tires combined to those made in the
American (U. S. A.) factories of each

Sheepowners Suffer Losses.
Roseburg, Or., Jan. 18. Stockmen
in Douglas county fear that half of
the Bheep in the county will perish as
ithe result of recent storms. Reports
from the larger flocks show .heavy
loses already, and there is no promise
of abatment in the weather, and there
is great lack of feed. There are about
20,000 sheep in the county. To add
to ithe seriousness of the situation,
lambing has started, and the young
are frequently, dying, where they, have
not the very best of care and protec
tion. James Ellison, a buyer for .
G. Young & Co., claims that the loss
is already very heavy in the Oakland
and Calapooia district.
