play the high school team, but owing

hall, the boys had to return without

The O. A. C. Glee club was with
us Saturday evening and were erect
ed by a full house, nearly 250. tickets
being sold. The program was well
rendered. After the last act the floor
was cleared, and a jitney dance wns
enjoyed, the local orchestra furnish
ing1 the music. '
Mrs. W. V. Connor-went to La
Grande Friday to visit and shop and
will return to Imbler this week. '
The blob school is holding its mid
year examinations ' and most of the
students are 'making , creditable

The writer was in Elgin Saturday
and visited that town's high School
where Mr. Khronenberg conducted
him through their new department?
and with not undue pride exhibited
the equipment which puts the Elgin
school in the front ranks in Union

Mr. Elmer E. Hall of Minneapolis,
Minn., came out to snend a few weeks
with Mr. and Mrs. N. N. Mason and
look over the Valley with the expecta
tion bf locating if the . country and
climate suits.
Mr. Baxter returned from a week's
trip to Imbler where he has been

Mr. Birchet made a business trip to
the Juncton Wednesday.
Mr. Gallaway left for Enterprise
Wednesday to spend a few days.
The Thomas boys went through the
valley Wednesday on their wav to
work again down the Grande Ronde.
Mr. John Miller has returned from
a trip for a few days in Portland visit
ing relatives and friends and he
brought a cook back with him.
Mr. Birt Oakman returned from n
business trip in La Grande Friday
and reports things fine out there.
Gallaway's team is hauling hay
from the Junction' this week.
. M. Hohn and Jess Kalnmbaok were
business visitors to the Junction Sat
urday. Mr. Thomas was a business visitor
to the Junction Saturday. -
Ben Hearld and brother went to the
Junction after a load of feed Sunday.
There is quite a bit or snow now
and prospects of rrfore, but the weather
is warm at present the mercury rang
ing 10 above zero most of the time.
The roads are all broke around here.

Miss Oro Brown went to La Grande
Sunday to be at the bedside of her
fattier, who is in the hospital, having
underwent an operation for cancer of
the stomach. -

Brown during her absence.

IN MBMORIAM.
- Cove, Ore., Jan. 10. Ben- Simmons,
a well known and respected resident of
this city, came from North Powder on
Tuesday evenings train, apparently as
well as ever, but the next morning fell
out of his chair dead. Heart failure
was the cause of his death.- ,
Ben Simmons waa born in La
Grande, Ore.. Jan. 26, 1883. .. He was
married to Miss Ada Wilson in 1906.
He leaves his devoted wife and an
eight year old son to mourn their loss.
Also an aged mother who lives in
Wullowa, and two brothers and three
sisters. Mr. Simnions recently become
a member of . Ml. Fannie Grange,
transferring his membership from
Medical Springs. Mt. Fannie Grange

conducted at the Baptist church by

of sorrowing neople followed the re
mains to the Cove cemetery where in
