' The first week in the year ends with a religious atmosphere. Several churches have 'been holding nightly prayer services, and more attention than usual has been given to affairs non-temporal than customary. All churches are looking forward to a splendid year's work in religious en deavor. ' Mid-Winter Camp Meeting The Salvation Army will hold a mid-winter camp meeting in the bar racks hall commencing Tuesday Jan uary 11th. Special -speakers will be provided and music will be arrang ed for every night. -. ' ' -, Union Church Analyzed Right now church affairs of a fed erated sort are of general interest, and Enterprise where such an insti tution exists, has been discussing the matter pro and con with liberality. After quoting- details of a meeting wherein, the matter was eone over with generous criticism and comment, the Enterprise Chieftain has this to say in an editorial way of the plan as applied to a small .town where there are no Y; M. C. A. facilities: - On another page is printed a re port of the annual meeting of the Fed erated church of Enterprise. The pas-tor- and other ' speakers , recognized points of strength and also of.weak ness in the union. The consensus of opinion seemed to be that the" feder ation is a step in the right direction and 1 offers opportunities for wider usefulness than the old system' of sep arate, rival churches, but that it has THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY, EVERY HOME IN LA GRANDE SHOULD; HAVE ELECTRIC LIGHT. Such nas ueen iri times past the central rallying point for any sect,' The members have found comfort in ga thering together around such a ritual, dogma, or creed, which at times they have made of greater importance than the essentials of morality or right living. ' ' Also, membfevship has remained in the individual churches forming the union rather than in the federation. Ordinarily, a strong, factor in keeping up' attendance and interest ; in ,a church is the loyalty of its members, who feel it their duty to help main tain the organization. This loyalty is partly to the old familiar creed or form of worship, and partly mere de votion to habit, by which everybody likes to follow a course of action he1 has been following. The mere fact of the union means the elimination of all such rallying points. There are left the great fun damentals, the principles of righteous living on which all men agree. This may seem commonplace, and .it cer tainly does rob the union of that peculiar individuality which has char acterized many of the great religi ous movements, which has given fire to zealots and leaders. 1 - On the other hand the federation is strong - in 'these points of seeming weakness.- It is built - on. a broad foundation where many persons find common footing. Having no parti cular creed to which to devote its en ergies, it has the opportunity to serve the community along lines in which many may join. - - ;.. v.This was urged strongly by speak ers at the annual meeting, t Particu larly it was suggested that the church do more in a social way, providing a place of clean, wholesome entertain-' ment and amusement. One speaker referred to the Y. M. C. A.., saying an association would be one of-the institutions for the future in Enter prise.' But the church is now organ ized along non-sectarian lines, and could perform' all the functions of a Y. M. C. A.' 1 without any further or ganization, maintaining a gymnasi um, billiard and pool tables arid other games for the man of the community. The excellent financial condi tion of the federation and all its ibranches showed that the organiza tion is maintained easily without any strain on the community and support ed the argument that the time has come. for undertaking broader work, to bring the church into closer touch with more of the population, tby rend ering additional service, to the people. 1 FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH.' , ' Sixth Street; - " ' Sabbath School 9:45, Jesse Wise man, superintendent.
