All Grades of Meat Take Spurt i . r : Portland Marketa. in Portland, Jan. 5. lonJay lambs jumped 65 cents in price, lifting the top from $7.60, the high mark of tho last three .months, . to -$8.25. Live stock prices , made magnificent ad vances at the Portland Union Stock Yards this week. Choice steers rose to the highest price in months when n number of head sold at 7.75. tows, not to 'be outdone; also rose 25 cents placing '-e top t $6. Calves were in cluded in -the advancing, list, and brought 60 cents'- more than formerly, going at $8 per hundred pounds. Heifers also followed the lead of the others in this division, and went up 40 cents, placing the top at $6.40. The bidding ..was brisk. Nothing like it has been witnessed at the yards in many moons. , . Hogs followed the 'cattle ' lead. Right off the bat prices aeroplaned 5 and then 10 cents. Before long they added another nickel,- and then the top was finally placed at $6.45, or $20 cents above Saturday. It was months ago well back in the old . year when this price was paid before. Hogs were wanted and the sales this week fully confirm the. prediction made' in last week that the tendency was up ward and high prices were expected. Sheep continued strong, with prices unchanged. He came to the city last week and was drinking rather heavily.
