Chamber- lain has just brought suit against Baker county to recover state taxes. These taxes are due to the amouni of $11,288.96. By the official census reports . we learn that Oregon has 313,767 inhab itants. La Grande has 2523; Pendle ton, 2500; The Dulles precincts ,4207, and Portland, East Portland and Al bina, 62,046. David L. Heidenreioh is putting up a brick veneered residence in Cog gan's addition. The school for the education of the Chinese has been re-opened and has an attendance of about twenty. There are three evening sessions each week. There are now sixteen inmates in the county jail at Union. The next regular term of circuit court' will be in -May, but it is probable that a spe cial session will be held before that time. ' An ordinance authorizing the 're corder to enter into a contract, with Engineers Adams & Gammett to sup erintend the construction of water works was passed to the second read ing. , J f i ' 4 I !
