Tarbell writes a most illumin ative and interesting article entitled "wnat women Are Keally Doing." Miss Tarbell takes occasion to refute with facts, which she has gathered by. making a careful study of thu Thirteenth Census, some of the false ideas on the woman question whicli are spread by platform- speakers throughout the country. The "plat form" says that "less than half of the forty-five million women of the country marry." Miss Tarbell an swers this allegation with the' follow ing statement of facts: "If we consider the sex as a whole, regardless of age, this is true. We have in the United States now 44,. 639689 'females,' including all from one year and under to one hundred years and over. Fifty-two and seven-tenths per cent of these babes, maids, and iwomen are single that is, less than half of the sex are married. But drop out those not yet of mar riageable age, and you have a differ ent story. There will, of course, be a difference of opinion about what is marriageable age; but. let us call it nineteen or over. If we settle on that, we must drop at once from our estimate something over twenty mil lions of the sex. It puts a different complexion at once on the marriage percentage.' As a fact, seventy per cent of those who are fifteen years or more old marrv: and if vou raise the age to twenty, 80 1-2 per cent marry; to bwtenty-five 86.7 per cent marry.
