New York, May 22 Caught in the thrall of the season's first heat, (which accounts for the smart set's sudden departure, the , great city turns its thoughts to the country club, and the stores display, trappings for tennis, noli, tramping and riding to tempt those who may tarry in town and the few who motor in to do their shop ping. . ; So exanting is the mode for sports, that the time is long past when a woman can appear on - the turf in haggy, ill-fitting clothes. Today her attire bespeaks the smart tailor. Separate coats are particularly pro mmerifc. Straight in Norfolk style, or flaring at the lower edge, they arc made of white chinchilla cloth, (white woolen barred in black, covert cloth, checks tweeds, washable corduroy, awning stripped linen and golf cord, the welt a silky rose and the stripe white. A decided liking for the silk Jersey sweaters is also evident, the styles medium in length, ranging from the regulation model finished with a band at the neck to fancy sweaters broad sashes and sailor colors. Plain colors, stripes and bars are shown as a rule rigidly followed in the clothes for sports wear, , the added width in skirts: is readily accepted. To be sure, skirts for walking, golf and tennis are not extreme, but now measure from two and a half to three yards around the lower edge. The tendency in hats seems to point to the mannish sailor with a fancy band; gloves are the gauntlet and neckwear the stock, usually pique or duck, in some cases embroidered with large preen polka dots or gay purple fleur-de-lis, if you chance to be an ally. That it is the intention of the said Commission to lew a special assessment against all the property hereinafter described for the purpose of paying the costs and expenses of improving the alley in block 107, of Chaplin's Addition to the City of LaGrande, Oregon, between Washington Avenue and Adams Ave nue, said improvement extending from the southeasterly property line of Elm Street to the northwest property Una of Fir Street, by grading said alley in said block 107, in said Chaplin's Addition, to the proper sub-grade and constructing thereon a concrete pave ment, twenty feet in width between the property lines in said alley and constructing the proper catch basins and pipes for drainage purposes, ac cording to the plans and specification" therefor heretofore adopted br said Commission and on file in the office of the Recorder of said city. That the real property included in and the boundaries of the district ben efited and affected by said proposed improvement are as follows: Com mencing at the northeast corner of block 107 of Chaplin's Addition to tha Town of La Grande, Union County, Oregon, and running thence south westerly along the west line of Fir Street to the southeast corner of said block; thence northwesterly along the north line of Washington Avenue to the southwest corner of said block; thence northeasterly along the east line of Elm street to the northwest corner of said block and thence south easterly along the south line of Adams Avenue to the place of begging, all in the City of La Grande, Oregon, and the estimated cost of said proposed improvement is $850.00. You will further take notice that said City Commission will meet at the Commission Chamber in the City Building of said city on the 26th day of May, 1914, at 7:30 o'clock, p. m. of said day to consider making said pro posed levy and will then and tf i re grant a hearing to any and all per sons feeling aggrieved against, or on account of, said proposed assessment.
