A Prisoner on the Yacht
CHAPTER I.

through which tbey had taken bis
beautiful June and arriving In time
only to see ber whirl away into the
night in Blye's luxurious limousine,
the heavy man with the thick eyelids
up In front wltb the driver, the mid'
die aged woman and the vivacious bru
nette wltb concern and fright on ithelr
pale faces as the dome light of the
- car sbono down upon tbem, and on
the rear seat wltb June the two men
' wbo had carried ber away by violence,
the white mustached man laughing,
and. the dark, handsome face of Oil
. bert Blye bending' over June with

his stupor. The limousine had turned
tbo corner.- On that sldo of the oafe
there was not a taxi to be aeon. Bob
ble's car stood in front, on the otber
street'. . While Iris endeavored to
arouse the stupefied Ned, Kobblo ran
. around and brought bis roadster. They
drove up to tho corner and turned
down the street, through which. the
limousine had disappeared, but where
In all that wilderness of moving ve
hicles could the track of June be
found? Nowhere! . It was as If the
earth bad opened and swallowed her up.
It might as well, for June, In a
awift motorboat with the gay party
which had kidnaped ber from tbe cafe,
was then Bwlftly approaching a long,
low yacht which loomed gracefully
above tbem In the misty river.
: June's struggles were useless In that
heaving water, and ber cries of pro
test were unheard In thnt lonely

ing stewardess held to June's lips a
glass of sherry, but June, drew away
from It with repugnance and, rising,
hurried away from tbe sumptuously
fitted salon. She did not know where
that passageway led except that it led
away from that hateful, company
Tbe stewardess followed her, tbe glass
of sherry still In her baud, "night In
here, dearie," and she opened the door
of a magnificent stateroom. Its inn
bogany walls paneled with Ivory tint
ed tapestry, its brass bed hung wltb
rich lace.
June hesitated, but down tbe pas
sageway came Orln Cunningham, bis
eyes twinkling and the laughter
wlno upon his Hps. June darted Into
tbe magnificent slnteronm. hastily shut
the door and locked It.
In tbe crimson and gold salon were
tbo popping of corks, gny laughter,
which even Mrs. Vlllnrd Joined, aud
then the loud strains of swift dance

Blye sat quietly, with that suave
smile upon his lips and stroking his
black Vandyke wltb his long, lean,
white fingers, upon ono of which spar
kled a diamond. He rose presently,
and, tiptoeing down the gangwuy,
stopped at June's door and listened.
He could hear an occasional stilled sob
as June sat amid the-soft cushions of
tbe couch. Before ber, through a half
open door, could be seen a glimpse of
a snowy white bathroom, and In tbe
adjoining little pale blue boudoir stood
June's own luggage! ' .
Ned! That brief sight of him had
filled June's whole soul with longing.

engine and the scraping of chains on
the yacht Hilarity. The anchor was
coming up, and there was an Instant
change in the easy rocking of tbe
craft. She shuddered, and then there
was the sound of seething water as

At tbe door of tbe sumptuously fit
ted crimson and gold salon on tbe
yacht tbe tottering Juno was confront
ed by a stolid steward, witn gray mut
ton chop whiskers, and a puckered
looking stewardess, wbo wore, as if
- habitually, a half whimper.
"The dearie looks faint," said the
stewardess.
, "Well, bring the yonng lady a glass

was on ber feet in an Instant She

the barely moving lights along shore.
The portholes were too small to let her
shoulders through. She ran to the door
and opened It stealthily, then closed It

tho salon.
The alert ear of Gilbert Blye caught
the click of that latch, slight as it was,
and his eyes glowed; he motioned sig
nificantly toward the corridor, and Ed
wards, reaching up, said something In
tho ear of Mrs. Vlllard. A slight
frown crossed ber brow, but she rose
Instantly and went down the gangway
to tho door of June's stateroom. She
knocked, but there was no answer.
"June!" she called. "June, dear!"
No answer. Mrs. Vlllard listened.
No sound. She went back slowly to
the salon.
You'll never make that child ono of
us, and she shook her head.
June sat on the conch In ber state
room with ber hands locked upon her
knees, staring Into the whlto Bllro of
brightness formed by the tiling of tbe
bathroom, and while sho pondered on
what sho should do Mm-lo and Henri
reached tho city and stopped nt a tele
graph office. When they ennio out of
that place n short, wide, thick man
who bad been waddling down the
street, with a blunt stub of a cigar lu
ono corner of his mouth and a look of
habitual furttveness In his little eyes,
started abruptly nt sight of Marie, and

The doorbell rang nt the Moore home
In Bryuport. Stern John Moore, read
ing his paper beneath the portrait of
June, looked tip quickly, nnd there was
a silent tremor at tho corner or ins
paper. Aunt Debby's voice was heard:
Why, It's Mr. Nod and Miss Iris.
Why, good cvenln. The ' folks Is to
home." '
Stern John Moore listened with si
lent attention while Mrs. Moore, her
hand upon her breast, stifled the emo
tions to which Iris Blethering gave
full play as tbe "kidnaping" was de
scribed.
There was but one conclusion among
the men, and Ned, composing his voice

clared. .

stated that conclusion.

declared and picked up the telephone.
"Our daughter Is In danger," said
the grave voice of John Moore.

sion of the City of La Grande, Ore
gon, to make an examination of the
property, upon which assessments are
to be levied to pay the costs and ex
penses of the street improvement here-

at quickly. In this recipe potato is utilized
to make doughnuts that will remain moist
and fresh for several days.

Heups flour-, t eggs; 1 ewp
sugar; i level teaspoonids
K C Baking Powder; 1 fco
spootyful af; I teaspoonful
mace; 1 cup cold mashed
jyotato: cwp milk, or more

Sift three times, the flour, salt, spice and
baking Powder. - Beat rggs with rotary
beater, then still using rotary beater, grad
ually add sugar, then work in the mashed
potato with a spoon and alternately add milk
and flour mixture. Make a soft dough, roll
into a sheet, cut into rounds, pinch a hole in
the center with the finger and fry in deep fat.
Fat for frying should not be hot enough
to brown the doughnut until it has risen.
When the doughnut is dropped into the fat
it sinks to the bottom. As soon as it comes
up it should be turned and turned a number
of times while cooking. This recipe ir ex
cellent as they do not take the fat in frying
and will stay moist tor day,.
