Cunningham leaned neg ligently on tbe foot of the bed. Before Mrs. Vlllnrd lay n picture of June clip ped from ii Brynport paper on tbe day of ber marriage to Ned Warner. Gilbert Blye. sitting In tbe far corner on tbe window Alll. with- bis Vandyke in bis long, lean white band, suddenly rose and, walking over to Cunningham, took tbe picture from him and laid It on tbe bed.- . . v Tbe pretty nurse with'1 the pink cheeks opened the door presently and ' beard these words in Biye's suave bat forceful tones: "The thing to do Is to gain ber confi dence. ' ' There must be a complete change of motbad." ' The voice stopped abruptly. Ed wards. Cunningham, Tommy Thomas and Mrs. Vlllnrd were All listening In tently. -Mrs. Vlllard seemed troubled. Tommy Thomas, with deviltry In ber e.ves, was laughing at Cunningham, who seemed uncomfortable. The round bended Edwards sat slowly nodding as be looked at Blye. Mrs. Vlllard reach ed ()ictly forward and turned the piece of paper on tbe bed face down ward. She seemed even sad. And June glanced down in cmbarrassmeut. - In that moment of ber downcast eyes Tommy Thomas and Mrs. Vlllard, Blye and Edwards, all glared at Cuiiulng bam. Ho flushed and walked nervously over to the window; "Really, the costume Is quite becom ing to you," be added In a tone he bad never used to her before, one of ex travagant respect. . x "indeed it Is, dear," said Tommy Thomas. Thoro seemed to lie a distinct chango lu tho attitude of all these people toward her. Yester day they hnd pursued her with a mock ing certainly. His black eyes glowed when they rested upon her, and he still wore his sunvo smile, though somehow ho seemed more frank. Juno found herself suddenly liking thin black Vnndykcd man. As she turned to smooth Mrs. Vlllard's pillows the. thrco men exchanged glances, and the suavely smiling Gil bert Blye stroked his black Vandyke. They turned their eyes as by one ac cord of the beautiful ruunway bride. A few dsys ago bis first Impulse would have been to rush up to Marie and selio ber and compel ber to tell what sbe kuew, but Marie bad proved herself to be a slip pery customer. Sbe bnd denied know ing Ned on bis first meeting with ber after tbe runaway. She hod denied knowing earnest and eager and black Aunt Debby when that faithful servant of June's mother bad happened upojt Marie In the market, and only yester day Marie bad run away from tbe en tire family, taking June's colliei Bounc er, with ber. There wus little to be gained from Marie. If Ned were able to force himself in and search the house June would be bidden by some one or be helped to escape, as bad happened yesterday at the Widow O'Keefe's and also at tbe Bond Securi ties building and everywhere else. So there wns but one t'tlng to do-to con ceal himself about the grounds until June herself should appear. He adopt ed that course, and the weary hours dragged on, noon, afternoon, evening. Witb tbe dusk the luxurious limou sine of Gilbert Blye left tho hospital, aud in Its brlllluutly lighted comfort eat tbe precious June and Mrs. Vlllard, Tommy Thomas. Orln Cunningham and Gilbert Blye. Strange what a dif ference this day had made in June's feeling townrd these people. They liked her. If their views of llfo were not her views she could keep ber own. They seemed to have discovered that she meant to retain her wnys of thinking and living, and it wns so much nicer since tliov hnd apparently acknowl edged till. Now her work ns compan ion to Mrs. Vlllard would he tniicn more p!eKiint. They were chatting In uiiy comradeship as they drew near the Vlllard home. He Jumped mad circles around Ned. leaped upon him. barking his loudest welcome, ran halfway up to the house, ran back to bark his Joy at Ned a vain and started to bring Marie! lie had no need to go nil tbe way. Marie had runic out on (he rear porch to see what was the mailer with Miss June's iiet. nnd the light from the house glistened on , her high cheek bones and her liberal supply of gums. Ned hud stepped back among (he bushes with the hope of edging him self over to the wall before Marie could arrive. To his surprise, however. Marie, though she looked down In that direction, did not come. She called Bouncer, and together they. went Into tho house. Ned took advantage of Marie's Indifference and of Bouncer's coiillnemeiit to slip closer nnd look In at the windows, front, side and renr. Tbe lower floor wns brightly Illuminat ed, the front porch light being lit. as If some one were expected. June! Some Instinct told Ned that she wns coming. He concealed himself behind the shrub bery nenr the porte-cochere nnd waited. Suddenly he Involuntarily tensed himself. Wheels were approaching. Then n brilliantly lighted limousine tped into sight, and us It turned the curve Ned snw in it Ills beautiful runaway bride. Snow carried from the mountain tops a distance of 18 miles was used in freezing ice cream served at the school rally at McKenzie Bridge . Wednesday night And it was good ice cream, says A. I. O'Reilly, county school supervisor, who attended the exercises.
