A number of prominent inter national politic'ans have urged him to inform his government at Wash ington that the time is ripe for a formal suggestion from the United States for cessation of . hostilities. Having, lost five or six minutes in the trip across the track the denartment extinguish ed the blaze with chemicals, but had to chop a hole through the root to get at it. The stock of grocers was destroyed. Then, to add to the discomforts, a piece of mechanism on the truck went wrong when the corner of Ehu and Washington was reached and the crew had to push the oar into quarters ty hand and spend the rest of the night unloading hose and " repairing the break and putting the hose back again. There has been no sleep at tire neau quartera since 1 o'clock or there abouts this morning. . Another April fool phase in con nection with the blaze was that the store had been sold to Mrs. Eliza beth Ryder, of North La Grande,, but all the papers had not been signed up. . Fire starting wrly this morning at Carson totally destroyed the postoffice, general store and telephone office- at that place. While the loss is known to be considerable, Currey and Carnahan, the proprietors of the store have not estimated the amount. It will be at least $5,000. Only a small part of this is covered by insurance. The only things saved were two of tlie post office records, postoffice, store and telephone office all being 1 in the same building. The home of Mr. and Mrs. I. Currey was also lo cated there. - , The fire was first seen from Half way at about 6 o'clock this morning Autos were at once rushed to tho fire but the interior of the building was already a mass of flames and noth ing could be- done. Judge Knowles sentenced Fred Williams, accused of larceny to one to 10 years,- Christopher Sears, larceny from a dwelling, one to seven years. Captain Burton, obtaining money under false pretenses, one to five years. It is expected these will all be sent to the Salem prison within a day or two. y' '';'-:';;;. ' Demurrer Halts Plea. William Erur and Chas. Fong, Chinese indicted bv the grand jury and who were to plead today to the charge of assault with intent to kill, have filed a demurrer to the indict ment and until this new phase, is dis posed of, they- will not have to file their pleas. From time to time the postmaster is notified of money or der forms being stolen, one of the. most recent being those stolen from Station A at Portland .Oregon. Merchants should at once, notify the local postmaster should any stranger offer to pass a money order, at the same time making a note .of the place of issue of the money order.
