Jt was quite natural for a bad check
artist in La Grande to cast the blame
on a bank cashier in Idaho. But our
experience has been that cashiers do
not mark "not paid for want of
funds," unless our bank account in
that bank is fundless.
Mrs. Carl Rowe is getting just and
proper recognition for her ability as
an artist in the handsome pictures
of Wallowa county scenery which
will adorn the Oregon building at
San Francisco.

It is the simple narrative of a poor
Italian's love for a girl of his .race,
his coming to America, his subsequent
marriage and the burning paternal
love for his little baby. .. ;
Beppo (Mr. Beban) toils hard to
make enough money to bring his
sweetheart -to this country. A baby
is born, but is stricken with illness
which the doctors declare will prove
fatal unless thwarted by the use of
pa-sterurized milk. r
On his way home with money to
buy the milk, Beppo is robbed by
thugs. He puts up a fight and 1s ar
rested. Suddenly he sees the ward
boss riding an automooiie. A plea
for assistance is .ignored and Beppo is
sent to jail. When he is released he
finds that his baby has died.
Swearing vengeance upon the ward
boss, who mhe blames for the baby's
death, the Italian awaits his chance.
It comes when the boss' infant is
stricken with brain fever. Beppo
gains entrance to the home and is
about to dash the baby's brains out
, when the tiny hand moving reminds

softens and he goes away to spread
flowers on the grave of his "bambino."
"The Girl of the Golden West" is
the big announcement for Friday and
Saturday at the Arcade. That an
