Many were turned away. The great audi ence greeted her with an ovation and the applause was frequent. There were many prominent peo ple in the boxes. The exiled King of Portugal, Manuel, and all the leaders of London society, with Mme. Albanl and other famous artists were pres ent. Miss Lyno had many recalls. She is 21 years old. The Lilly home was taste fully decorated and the whole scheme was in yellow. Refreshments were nerved on tables decorated with hand some mirrors in the center upon which rested bouquets of yellow flowers. All place cards carried a proper decora tion. Following the card games the grafonola was pressed into service and the afternoon closed with exquis ite merriment. . On Thursday of this week, the Un lucky Thlrteeners met with Mrs. Guy small folders containing the pictures of Miss Ramsdale and Mr. William son. Covers were laid for eight and those enjoying Mrs. Girdler's hospi tality were the Misses Lucile Rams dale, Janet Hershey, Janet Jones, Lou Jones, Stella Hunter, Margaret Anson and Stella Oliver. Miss Ramsdale is connected with the school faculty and Mr. Williamson is one of La Grande's foremost bachelors, being at present employed as prescription clerk in the Silvcrthoin drug store. .j. 4. .j. . Relative to the appearance on the vaudeville this week of Harold Grady and Harriette Harlow of Portland, a Portland critic says: "A large representation of society maids occupied the boxes at Pantages Theater yesterday afternoon and night to witness the opening performances sional debut of Miss Harriette Harlow. who, with Harold Grady, is appearing in dancing . specialties at the theater this week. I. A. gathered in the tablemacle basement to enjoy the first exhibition ot the dramatic section of the M. I A. work. "The Bull Pun And the Baby"; the burlesque melodrama, "The Fatal Necklace," was presented by the senior members; the program ending with the "Patriotic Drill," by uio yuuiiK tames. , me enthusiasm with which those numbers were re ceived indicates that the dramatic sec tion of this organization bids fair to out rival the basketball team of the athletic section in public approval and appreciation. Members of the La Grande band, which though inactive at present is still largely represented by local citi zens, serenaded one of its members Tuesday evening when Mr. and Mrs. Raymon McKennon were imnMv surprised at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. McKennon. The McKennnns. who were married at Hood River nrntiv. were made the special recipients of much music and best wishes and after the serenade was concluded, the band men were invited to the McKennon home where refreshments were served by Mr. and Mrs. J. D. McKnnon. The band boys agreed during the evening to -visit the Raymond McKennon ranch delightfully entertained at their homo near Island City, Monday nteht, by about 25 of their neighborhood friends. The rooms were prettily decorated with hearts and cuplds, and a large wedding ' bell - in one corner, under which a mock wedding took place. The decorations were put in place while Mr, and Mrs. Shroeder were calling on neighbors. The occasion was the tenth anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Shroeder's wedding and there was plenty of tin to celebrate it.r A dainty two-course luncheon was served at the proper time and the guests de parted, having had a very enjoyable time. - . . ' : 4. 4. 4 :'' Last Saturday afternoon neigh bors of Mrs. J. L. Williams, former ly residents at 403 Spring, gave a most delightful . surprise in honor of Mrs. Williams who has gone to Los Angeles to join her husband as they will make ' their future , home there. The farewell was a .most delightful affair and .the guests includod eleven ladies and several children. ' Those who came to surprise Mrs. Williams were Mesdames H. P. Williams, Frank George, E. J. Bartemess, Will Wil liams, Ray Buel, Ben Shores, E. Reis land, Corwin Grave, H. J. Bookman and Roscoe West. .; ; . v -; 4 4 4 . " The program for the Neighborhood Club next Tuesday afternoon includes a paper on ."Perpetuity and stability of the Chinese Nation," by Mrs. Al bert Hunter, one on "Antiquity and High Moral Tune of the Literature," by Mrs. J. D. Smith,- and another Remarkable Defects of Moral Char. acter Of the Chinese People," by Mrs. F. E. Livengood. Mrs. J. F. Corbett will sing a solo at the opening of the program. There are still a few H. linquent dues to hear from, announce club officials. Clark was hostess to the afternoon section of the Kaffee Klatch this week. Mrs. A. L. Rich ardson added to the enjoyment of the afternoon with several vocal se lections which were greatly appre ciated. Mrs. Vincent Palmer will en tertain next week. .
