"Wild Bill" Donovan, once one of
the rrMteat of bastball pitchers, has
been selected as the manairer of the
New York : American - League Cnib, !
just purchased by Jacob Ruppert and I.
T. Ik Huston. He will cake the place
left vacant by Frank Chance, - who
gmve up the job of trying to make a
pennant contender ,ox the crab.
Donovan . went to the Providence
dub of the International Leagu last
season and took It from the bottom
to, the top. When the Baltimore Im
ternational League Club was broken
up by the sale of star players it left
the way open for another to win the
pennant. Donovan made the race and
won at last. , He' showed qualities
which it is believed by his backers
prove he is a very able manager. In
fact, ho has been given credit for
much of the success of Hugh Jennings
manager of the Detroit club of the
American League. : He is said to have
been the chief adviser of Jennings in
the days when the club was regular
ly winning the American League pennant
urer. ;
This organization has been active
in athletic circles for the past eight
years winning, the Eastern' Oregon
championship in their class in basket
ball over Union and Baker last sea-

Ray Winters is captain of the team
and Earl Reynolds is manager. A
committee has been selected to, ar
range gmes with Pendleton, Baker
Union, Elgin, Cove' and North Pow
der. The club is composed of live
wires. and the public will undoubtedly
hear from them; during the coming
season of activities.
This evening at 6:30 o'clock, in the
office of Secretary A. A. Wenzel, the
sportsmen of this city will meet to
elect officers for the coming year
and look after such other matters as
may come before $hem. It is pur
posed to call the meeting early that
it may not interfere with the dancing
party this evening. ,
Friday evening the annual election
of officers sf the Daisy Cadet club
resulted in Albert R. Currey succeed
ing George McDonald as president
and Ralph Westering was succeeded
by Oscar Johnson as secretary-ttreas-

At 8 o'clock tonight the directors
of the Amateur Basketball . league
will meet at the Y. M. C. A. office in
the bank building to select an avail
able list of referees and umpires for
the scheduled Season. As practically
all who have playing experience with
the rules are eitJher members of one
of the teams, or affiliated .. in some
way, the directors will have to go out
on a still hunt to find suitable offi
cials. It is planned to open the league
before the Y.. M. C A. gym is ready,
so that the schedule may not be cur
tailed or delayed. The " first game
will be played Wednesday night.
La Grande bowlers are awaiting the
arrival in the city tomorrow of the
Pendleton pinsmashers, against whom
the La Grande bowlers are to be pit
ted tomorrow night. .

An extra large attendance is ex
pected in view of the keen interest
taken : both by Pendleton and La
Grande pin destroyers.
Haines and Union High School met
on the basket ball floor last Satur
day night and the result was a lop
sided score of 68 to 8 with the home
boys on the long end of the score.

conceit out of the M. I. A. basket
ball team the vaunted athletic
champions of Eastern Oregon, Mon
day nurht on the tatter's (home floor.
The Union boys were handicapped by
a long cold ride but went into the
game with a vim that swept the
heavier team all over the floor for
the first half. The score at the half
stood 7-14 for the Union team. By
running in a number of fresh players
the M. I. A. team ' managed to nose
out by two lonesome points at the
finish. Unless the La Grande ath
letes can make a better showing whtn
they come to Union the home team
will make them look like thirty cents.
