SHIS III QUAUDRY MISSIONARY BOARD EXPLAINS ATTITUDE, War Zone Calls, Relatives Hold Back, '..'. Says Secretary. J. G. Snodgrass Grocer Quality Phono Main 43- Service Honest Prices Dr. ; H. L. ; Underwood of this city has received a copy of the American Missionary Board quarterly, caption ed "war news, extra edition." In it are set out many- interesting things about Turkey, but principally, deals with the missionary situation at the present time. The editor of the bul letin remarks: There has been so much talk in the newspupers over the declaration of "A Holy War" by the Sultan ot Turkey, and so many friends appear to think -that the Moslem world is about to indulge in a general mas sacre of Christians, that we have ask ed the senior secretary of the Board Rev. James L. Burton, D. D., to mako a statement on the subject. , Dr. Bar ton says: ..; . ' AH wars of the Turks frmo their point of view, are "holy wars," the public declaration that Turkey is now engaged in a holy war with the Allies is tantamount simply to the declara tion on the part of the Allies that they are, a war with Turkey. It is a simple declaration of war: nothing more, nothing less. : From the : Mo, hammendan . standpoint,', however, there is a great incongruity, .recog nizee) by . the Mohammedans them selves and often spoken of, in carry ing on a holy, war under the leader ship of non-Moslem or Christian of ficers, as the Turkish arrny is now 'largely officered by Germans. .There is no possibility, in the judgment of those who best understand th situa tion, that, under these circumstances, what is commonly understood as a "holy war" canfbe fought. Turkey to day under German domination has no leadership in the Mohammedan world. No call for a holy war issued from Constantinople can have any -influence over Mohammedans in general even in turkey much less in Arabia, kgypt, Persia, India, and elsewhere. There is no need . of any anxious thought on the subject of the, calling of a Holy War on the part of Turkey at this time. - - Why Missionaries Remain.;, The secretaries of the Board are between two fires in these days. On the one hand the missionaries in Turkey are stirred up because' the Board is holding back fifteen newly appointed missionaries on account of the war. On the other hand the . rela tives and friends of the missionaries . now in Turkey rebuke us for not iiwg an oi mem nome. The mis sionaries write: "Under what possible argument are you keeping these workers from sailing when the oppor tunity here is so great?',' The friends and relatives write: "How dare you assume the responsibility of keeping the missionaries in Turkey , in times like these?',' Each' position is natural but is based upon lock of information. The new workers for Turkey are kept in this country not because we would fear, for their safety were they At their stations, but because travel, es pecially in the interior of the country is impossible or unduly hazardous, TO-NIGHT At Toot of the Vtedes and the Ring of the Bells- Make one good New Year's Resolution "I am going to . save morey during 191fl" and at The United Store is the place to buy to h.s:p mo save these earnings.
