Knowles, the hog choler ex pert who spent a couple of weeks in this valley this fall telling the farm ers how to 'prevent an epidemic of the much dreaded hog disease, is now in Pennsylvania where he was tent by the Federal authorities to help fight the foot and mouth disease. Mr. Knowles is recognized as one of the greatest authorities in the United States on animal diseases, and the fact that the government officials pulled him all the way from Oregon to Pennsylvania to help eradicate the cattle disease is in itself a compliment sufficient . to make the farmers of Oregon appreciative of the worth of this man who was assigned to the work in this section, and hopeful that he wilt be returned to Oregon after his work- in the East is completed. Writing of the progress of the fight on the foot and nouth disease Prof. Knowles says: ': ' "I had a telegram directing me to report on the work . of eradicating foot and mouth disease and left Cor vallis November 29. I found a great plenty' of work here as there are not nearly enough B. A. I. men to do the work before us. The disease seems to be pretty well circumscribed andj we hope to be able to confine it to the present known areas. : There are but few new cases showing up now and the job ahead of is to clean and disinfect the infected premises. There are about 160 in Lancaster county. X am now supervising two crews of ten men each and it takes a crew about two days, on the average, for a barn and premises. It is probble that we wiU be here until early spring but if there should be a sudden falling off of new cases I may be back in Oreg.)n in time to see the opening of March in the Willamette Valley. In the mean time I shall be out in the cold and storms of Penna. hardening mus cles that have been softening - for . many years."
