Scarborough, on the east coast of England, is one of the greatest watering places in the British Isles, and is a city of considerable impor tance with a population of 40,000. It is finely situated in the form of an amphiteatre on slopes rising from the sea and mounting a promontory Jutting into the North Sea. It is a little more than 200 miles from Lon don and thirty-seven miles northwest of the city of York. On the head land and commanding a fine view of the harbor are the ruins of a twelfth century castle. Near that is the ancient Church of St. Mary, consist ing of a nave of what was originalyl a fate Norman and Early English church. The fashionable parade is the Marine Drive, two and a half miles long, protected by a sea wall and embellished with gardens. Scar borough js popularly known as the I'Queen 6f Watering Places." There is a large spa, a fine museum and promenade piers. This map shows the location of the towns and cities on the east coast of England which were bombarded by German cruisiers, and the probable course of the cruisers to the attack across the North Sea. Scarborough, Hartlepool, West Hartlepool, and Whitby were among those into which shells were thrown by the German cruisers. It was believed by the naval ex perts that the cruisers left the vicini ty of the Kiel Canal or Heligoland and make their way up the coast of IJenmark to a point on the coast of lT?i.y.n?thweft from Christiania t"5" th?y shot southwest across the North Sea to Scarborough.
