Comes to La Grande to Oppose $1, 500 Exemption Law Talked of. To spread opposition to the U'Ren $1,500 exemption law, Robert E. Smith, secretary of the Oregon Ra tional Tax Reform association, is in La Grande today. The exemption jlaw, says Mr. Smith, is single tax in another cloak, and his association is much opposed to the plan. He met local businessmen and votersin gen eral today explaining the phases of the measure. Bowman Hurt In Runaway Smash. Rain and Hail Damages Hay. JURY DISAGREES. Baker, July 1. Constable, C. R. Bowman was badly shaken up, cut and bruised in a runaway accident at noon yesterdlay at Tenth and Campbell 1 streets. He had been driving all over, the Pocahontas district after wit- ! nessos in a county case and was just returning to the city when the horse, apparently untired by the long drive, appeared to go crazy. It made a wild j dush, swung around a telephone polo just missing, it and plunged into some !ui:derbrush and shrubbery, throwing ! After careful deliberation by jury which heard tho charges and evidence against Roonie and McKenzie, charg ed with robbing stores at Cove and Imbler, a disagreement was the re sult and the jury has been discharged. Austrian troops had gained the upper hand in various provinces in which the pro-Servian and anti-Servian disorders broke out following the assassinations nnd fire. Constable Bowman yesterday arrested Frank DeBacker of the Pocahontas district on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon j on complaint of Mike Speelman, a 1 neighbor farmer. The arrest is the ! outcome of a neighborhood quarrtj which culminated a week ago in a" ' personal clash between Mr. Speelman and Mr. DeBacker. The argument ' arose over some cattle having been 'permitted to go through a fence. Mr. ! Srcelman alleges that DeBacker hit him in the eye with a rock and the : rock, covered with blood, was given to the district attorney as evidence. Mr. DeBacker admits hitting Mr. Speel man but says he hit him with his fist nnd that Speelman fell on a pile of ' recks and in that way got blood on one of them.
