Pennsy Sportsmen Meet. Prospector's "Find" Excites. Baker, June 30. The appearance here yesterday of Jim McCabe, an Auburn prospector, with a bottle of gold dust and nuggets worth about $60 and the story of uncovering a pocket from which, according to his story, he has taken about $3,000, caused much interest and the yarn was mag nified in the telling until the old days were recalled and a rush to Auburn seemed imminent. It was stated that the amount taken from the pocket by McCabe w$f anywhere from $100 up $22,000, evidently increasing as tV story was passed around. Bill Mix, a well known prospector, Pitsburgh, June 30. Canoe racing, revolver and rifle shooting, , power boat races, fly and bait casting and i number of other sports were on the card of the United Sportmen of Penn sylvania, ' who convened! here more than 2,000 strong today. The sessions continue tomorrow and Thursday. Dis cussion of fish and game laws and suggestions for improving them to meet new conditions is 8 regular part of the organization's work. When the county court meets to morrow County Clerk Ed Wright will lay before it the county scalp bounty situation which has taken a peculiar turn in Oregon. The secretary of state recently sent out notices to all county clerks saying that because the scalp bounty fund in the state was ex hausted, the state would no longer pay half of the bounty money which the county clerks issue. In Baker, and it is said in some other counties, the county courts have decided! to refuse to issue warrants if the state won't pay half. Information reaching La Grande however is to the effect that the state and county must con tinue to pay bounties whether the fund is exhausted or not In view of the many complications to the question, it will come up before the county court tomorrow and will in nil probability be settled by an at torney general decision later on. No More Bounties in Baker. Baker, June 30. Xo more bounties will be paid on wild animals in the Stnte of Oregon after July J. This in formation was received by County Clerk Combs from Secretary of State Olcott, who stated that the bounty fund is exhausted and there is no certainty that the next legislature will, make an appropriation. Following this information, th Baker county court made an order, 1 which was filed yesterday, that Baker , county would not pay bounties from county funds, therefore after July 1 no more bounties will be paid in Ba- j ker county. j The present bounty law was made two years ago and the action of the legislature was depended on to pro- ' vide appropriations. With the de- i pletion of the appropriation created at the last session, the revenue of a large number of trappers and hunt-' ers will be cut down, especially in the counties east of the mountains abounding in wild game, for which bounties were offered. ! 81NCER1TY.
