This is Mr. Edsall's program, and he has had such wide experience that he knows precisely how to proceed. The sur vey has been delayed a few days, awaiting the arrival of new instru ments, which went astray. The gangs will be housed in tents. Like shelter will be provided for the dining quarters, the cooks, the horses , and for other purposes. Mr. Edr sail has learned from many previous large jobs that it pays to provide well for the men and the accommo dations will surprise those not fa , miliar with modern methods. In the sleeping tent double deck iron beds will be provided, giving each man his individual bed. Each bed will be supplied with steel springs mattress or tick, while sheets and , pillow slips, and blankets and quilts. The white bedding will foe washed every week. The tables in the dining tent will be spread with white cloths. White , enameled dishes of the very best quality have been bought, and the knives and forks will be of "Montana silver," a composition metal that does not tarnish, but keeps bright like the . genuine silver. The food will be of the best, and will be prepared in a separate tent. Mr. Edsall likes to treat his men well, and he has found that it pavs. It keeps the crew full handed, and the men do more and better work when they receive considerate treat ment, eat wholesome meals in clenn andl appetizing surroundings, and sleep in sweet, comfortable beds, i The first construction camp will bo started a short distance north of En terprise. There will be about 00 men working in it at the first. As the . crew is enlurged, the camp will be enlarged, rather than a second camp established. For men with teams the pay will be $4.00 a day. The company will pro vide board and sleeping quarters for the men for 75 cents a day, and the cost of feeding and caring for the horses also will be 75 cents a day, or $1.50 a day for the "keep" of man and team. Or the workers can board and keep themselves and their teams at Jheir own expense and receive $4.00 4 Uy. Men working alona will receive -$2.W a day, board and lodging 75 rceifts, C. D. A man will tell you at times that a drink of beer will not hurt you; , that it is good for you, in fact and ' that alcoholic beverages used in mod- j eration are all right Scientific re- search has proven this: In the summer of 190!! an Interna tional conference on alcoholism was held in London to which most of the great nations sent scientific men or delegates. Comparing the results of investigation made in all parts of the world, finding that these results agreed, representative medical lead ers of the conference drew up a re port in the form of a statement defin ing the nature of alcoho. as follows: The Nature of Alcohol. "Exact laboratory, clinical, and pa thological research has demonstrated that alcohol is a dehydrating, proto plasmic poison, and its use as a bev erage is dlestructive and degenerating tr the human organism. Its effects upon the cells and tissues of tha body are depressive, narcotic and anesthe tic. Therefore, therapeutically, its use should be limited and restricted in the same way as the use of other poisonous drugs." Now this report is the result of the leading scientists of the world gather ed together for the purpose of find' ing out just how alcohol effects the human organism. Now some people dissociate alcohol and beer, thinking there is no alcohol in beer. Beer con tains from 2 percent to 6 percent pure alcohol, so that if a man drank The kind with the least alcohol and drank a gallon a month he wouldl have drunk a little over six tenths of a gill cr al most a fourth of a pint of deadly poi son. Snake-Bite Fallacy. The old idea that alcohol is good foi a snake bite, mad-dog bite or oth er forms of poisoning must give way, for experiment has shown that in such cases alcohol not only does no good, but actually hinders and even prevents other treatment roin being effective. Two men biten at the same time on the streets of ram by the same mad dog were treated at the same hospital. One speedily recover ed. The othijr was not susceptible t: treatment and died. Though not in ebriuted andl not a heavy drinker, but only a temperate regular drinker, it was found thnt the alcohol in his sys tem prevented all treatment from tak ing effect. How Alcohol Effects (he Blood. Now when we speak of alcoholic beverages we mean any beverage likj beer, wine, brandy, whiskey, etc. Un der the microscope it was found that even a moderate drink of alcoholic beverage passing quickly into th blood paralyzes the white blood puscles. They 'behave like drunken men. In pursuit they can not catch the disease germs. In conflict they can not hold the disease germs from devouring, and they can not operate in great phalanxes, as they do wHon sober, against such powerful germs as those of consumption. Challenge. Now I challenge any, man or wo man to show me that liquors (alco hol beverages) have done more good) than hnrm in the United States. You Must Drink. Why Not Try This Scheme. To the married man who cannot get along witmmt his eye openers, tho following is suggested sa a solu tion to the kondage of his habit: First Start a saloon of your own at home. Second 'lie the only customer. You will have no license to pay. Give your wife $2 to purchase her first gallon of whiskey and remember there are sixty-nine drinks in a gal lon. Third Buy your drinks from no one but your wife, and when the first gtillon is gone she will have $8.00 to put in the bank nnd $2.00 to start business again. Fourth Should you live ten years imd continue to luiv booze from ber nnd then die with snakes" in your ''ots, she will have sufficient mon ey to give you a decent burial nnd enough left to give the children ,i good education and buy a house and ftt, marry a decent man and quit thinking about you.
