How the Body May Bo Robbod of Its

A cold floor Is one thut conducts bent
awiiy from the body, not necessarily
oue that In cold In Itself. A wooden
floor and a stoue floor exposed to Ihu
cold will In themselves have no great
difference In temperature. But one
may walk barefooted over a wooden
floor with comparative comfort, no
mutter bow cold the weather, wblle a
stoue floor will Beein to freeze the feet
On the otber baud. In a warm room
tbe stoue floor will be warmer thiin the
wooden floor, for it will take up tbe
beat Thus the beat from a rudlutor
standing on a stone or tile floor will
make It warm for several feet lu every
direction, but it will affect the wooden
floor only very slightly. A cold floor,
therefore, Is not a floor which sends
cold luto tbe body through tbe feet
but one wbicb takes away tbe body
beat, leaving it cold.
Life consists in keeping up tbe body
beat. It is in order to get sufficient
body bent thut we eat and to retain it
that we weur clothes. Were there no
wind and if we moved hardly at nil
clothes would not be necessary, be
cause tbe beat of the body would keep
a layer of heated air about us nil the
time. But tbe wind and our natural
movements constantly disperse this
layer of heated uir. and In consequence
we wear clothes to keep this layer in.
In summer coolness is secured by
loose clothing, which lets the wind
blow away the heated air; in spring
and fall tnoro closely woven garments
keep the heated uir near, in very cold
weather furs ure used, because the
tkln and the fur afford a powerful re
sistance to the escape of body beated
air. As long as the body beat Is kept
up illness Is likely to be a long time
awuy.
Cold floors rob us of body heat tbey
steal away our vitality. The slow sap
ping of vitality that conies from stand
ing on cold floors Is fearfully weaken
ing to the system. No matter how old
or ragged a rug or carpet, no matter
bow thin a cork or liber mat. It will
lengthen your life and save yon from
numberless discomforts which cold

THE CURIOUS LUSHEtS.
An Eastern People Who Are Afraid to
Speak Their Own Names.
In his book, "The Lushel Kukl Clnn."
Lieutenant Colonel J. Shnkespcnr tells
of o curious trait of the Kushels, a
Bengal frontier race. They have n
strong and general dislike to speaking
their own names. The author tells of
bis experience with this strange peO'
pie and accounts for that fenr in tbe
following manner:
When we first occupied the hills a
man would not tell us bis name. If
asked he would refer us to some one
else and say, "Yuu tell him." The fol
lowing explanation of their bnbit was
given by a Lushel:
"Lusbels are sby of saying tbe name
of their father and their mother and
their own name. Because it is their
own name tbey are shy of saying It
Some people ure shy because their
names are bad. Their parents' names
because tbey nre their parents they
never call them by their names; there
fore they nre shy of saying them.
Their own names also they never say.
Just for that reason they are shy of
saying them. The names of their
brothers and friends tbey nre always
saying; therefore they are not shy of
snylug them."
Long ago another explanation was
given. When a man kills another he
calls out his own name, "I, Lalmangn.
have killed you!" so that the spirit of
the dying man may know whose slave
be will be In "Mlthl-Khun," tbe dead
man's vlllnge. Accordingly, it was sug
gested, it was unlucky for a person to
speak bis name on a less important occasion.
