1 PAGE TWO. LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER MONDAY, JUNE l&H. UNION FALLS BEFORE SLATE UNION SETS FRIDAY OF THIS WEEK AS LA GRANDE DAY LOCAL YOUNGSTER PITCHES, FIELDS AND BATS. Intensely Interesting Game, Well Scrambled, Played Yesterday. Standing of the Clubs. La Grande Elgin ......... Cove ......... North Powder Imbler W. 2 3 1 0 0 L. Pet 0 , 1000 1000 .333 .000 .000 La Grande won over Union yerter- day afternoon on the local play-' grounds, 10-7, in a game that carried with it all the intense interest and , all the 57 varieties of the national outdoor pastime. Slate and the vet eran McMillan were pitted ; against each other for eight innings, McMil lan giving way to Miers in next to the last canto. Both men pitched good baseball, but Slate was tight though out and at no time did he bring any thing on himself deserving defeat, while McMillan on the other hand did contribute to his own downfall. Lew in, a college youth just breaking into the semi-pro game, got off with an awful start and put McMillan in the hole. Lewin tightened and played better- ball as the game went on. Slate's performance was indeed great. He fielded seven bingles perfectly, got a out and twice started rallies that put plenty of white space between the two teams. Outside of Slate's performance at fielding and pitching his pitching baffled, for he has a good mixture, a change of pace and good control the next item of special mention must be Mulvehill. The. old-time back-stop made five trips up to the plate and four times ho hit husky, grass burn ing bingles, one for extra bases. There was : nothing puny about his swats either. O'Brien drove out o single in the first inning that lost ; itself in field grass and he pranced home, but he pranced too far from second and was ! called out. Not until the third, did Union score. In that inning O'Brien I hud walked and Slate got binglcd by Mulvehill, Nodine and Caldwell, and Miers and Skiff banged into fielders' choice plays Coupled with an infield j boot the visitors scored three. They repented in tho next chapter. Davis wont out, Oliver to Mclnnis, but O'Brien, Mulvehill, Nndine singled, and Oliver threw high on Micr's drive. I Mulvehill's hit had scored O'Brien ' and Nodine brought Mulvehill and Miers over the pan. Lu Grande and Slate tightened- and slopped the run business by. striking out Caldwell and getting Lewin it t first. Davis singled in the next lining, was sacrificed by O'Brion, scored on Mulvehill's fourth and last hit. Although beaten, the Union Horse Show smile spread it f.clf on the visiting delegation. La Grande opened with two in tho first when Lewin's boots and Oliver's hard hit did the business. Tn tho fourth McMillan was touched by Humphrey, (Jnlbreith, Pidcock, Mcln nis. In addition there was an infield boot and a sacrifice, nil counting for four. Not until the (ith did the Club bers score again, taking advantage (t McMillan's wildness for two walks and Pidcock's drive. Speed Humph rey, Galbreilh and Oliver each hit into fielder's choice, poor brain work on O'Brien's part letting in two of 4. FORMAL INVITATION GIVEN.
