Writer Sets Out Some of the Attri
butes of Portland, Oregon.
Indicating, not only clever powers
of description by the young tout some
thing of the plans used by citizens
-of., Portland to advertise the rose
show, is a recent letter from a Port
land niece of Peter Kuhn of this city.
Mr. Kuhn received the following let
ter yesterday from a little Portland
girl who has the making of a genuine
tooster: . ' ,
Portland, Oregon, May 26, 1914.
My dear Grandpa: , Many, many
times it has occured to me to write
to you a descriptive letter relative
to our great city of the Northwest.
I speak of Portland as "our" city, be- '
cause just the mere chance of living
here makes it mine and yours and
seems to spell welcome and once
domiciled, within its beautiful gates
one dreads the thought of ever leav
ing. The location is s-.oerb, as it is sit
uated in the wonderfully productive
Willamette Valley on the banks of the
Willamette River, and is tributary to
all of the state of Oregon as well as
a large portion of Washington, Idaho
and California. We of Portland,
hardly realize the possibilities and
the realties of the great growing
center in which we live. i
It seems as if nature must have
saved her best from everywhere to '
put into and embellish this one little
spot into a glorious Eden. i
Our climate is unsurpassed, being
equable the year round. We have no '
storms, consisting of blizzards, tor
nadoes, thunder storms, wind storms,
etc. The only disagreeable feature,
if it can be called disagreeable is the
abundance of. rainfall we have. This
feature is soon eliminated by the
fact that we have very few real
downpours, such as - you experience
m the East and middle west, it is
the fine Oregon rain or mist that
makes the crops and keeps the air
so pure and clean. Portland's men
and women are noted for the clarity
of their complexions. This, no
doubt is due to the soft, pervading
atmosphere of Portland! When one
becomes acclimated to the Rose City,
he dories in the mist and in the
beautiful mild sunshine.
Our sunshine is warm and enticing
but never glaring. One can live out
in our sunshine without frowning
and scowling, causing wrinkles and
ill temper. In fact the equability of
the climate tends to calm and sooth,
thereby making everyone lovable
and kind.
, The climate and soil is especially
adaptable to the culture of all sorts
of flowers. Although Portland has
gained an enviable reputation
throughout the country owing to the
beauty and perfection of her roses,
every . other specie of flower and
shrub can 'be as easily cultivated, can
attain the same heieht of perfection
in its certain class. Portland is also
very ' progressive cityt Its build-
inirs are second to none in - tne
country and its commercial and man-
ufactorinK enterprises compete witn
those of the business world.
Once a year Portland has a rose
festival. During this period, it
would be impossible to find a more
charming, gay, .beautifully decorated
city. Every citizen does nis utmost
to make the entire affair a success,
and one is fascinated as he realizes
that the rose is the queen of flowers,
also Portland is the queen of pic
turesque cities.
