Prof Mazanti, is at Weiser for a
few days finishing a former engage
ment as instructor to a class in
dancing. During his absence Mrs.
Mazanti is conducting Danceland in
this city.
Last evening another class was
graduated from La Grande's public
school. Another class of bright,
healthy boys and grris hav. started ,
An life following the number of years
each has spent in earnest preparation '
in the schools of the city. j
It is a direct tribute to our school
i
system, to our community organi-!
zation and to the ability and earnest
ness of the teachers employed to j
turn out as likely young men and
young women as those who last even
ing heard the final word in common '
school life when they listened to the
commencement address.
The speaker, Mr. Price, dwelt on
reeded economic conditions in life,
praised the young lady graduates
for putting a five dollar limit on
graduation gowns and the praise
was entirely proper.
That this has been a very success
ful school year under Superintendent
John Girdler's administration there
ic no question. So far as we can
learn the standard of an already
good school system has been raised;
the requirements increased, and
pupils trained to meet requirements
demanded.
La Grande is justly proud of her
schools and this does not mean her
high school entirely, for the grade
teachers have done excellent work.
It is gratifying to know that most
of the present teachers will return
next year. Changing teachers is
like changing congressmen. If re
sults are wanted and a community
has a good crop of instructors it
never pays to change.

as it were, the sum total of a busy
and widely known man's philosophy
of life, who begins to realize that
popularity and esteem of men' is but
fleeting and that the only thing that
brings security and independence in
this life are the material things of
life. r.
In conformity with this phijbsophy
he advjsed all of , the. graduates to
make the resolution of the' gm grad
uates a rule of life, striving by eco
nomy and the proper disdain of friv
olous and costly things, to lay by
each year the sum of $100 for thirty
years after which time, the girls
would be economically independent
and the young men would be enabled
to execute the ambitious dreams of
their heyday period of life.
Along the line of this reasoning',
Mr. Pierce stated tnat he, as regent
of the Oregon Agricultural college,
would, next year, introduce a resolu
tion that will require each person of.
that institution to satisfactorily pass
an examination in the correct com
posing, punctuating and typewriting
of a letter as a condition precedent
to receiving a diploma from the
school.
In speaking specificplly o' the
work that can be done by women, he
advised the young ladies to become
teachers, 'making the significant re
mark in reference to their value and
worth, that most of the reform which
has made itself felt in this country
is the work of the school "marm"
that since the Civil War period most
of the tremendous progress in peda
gogical work has been done by wo
men. "I,oarn to do the ordinary things
that the world constantly requires,"
said he, "and for this reason I would
suggest that each girl also learn
typewriting.
His closing remarks dealt with
moral precept and among the signi
ficant statements in this connection
he asserted that all should try to
be honest but should not bank on
the honesty of others, for they would
often not find it. "Do things for the
sake of conscience," said he, "for
virtue is its own reward. Populari
ty is an accident and is fickle, but
character is enduring. Be grateful
but do not expend it on others."
This address was followed by
a select number by Messrs. Fer
riri Stooilard and Davis, the presen
tation of diplomas by Principal 01
san and a chorus number. There
wore about TOO persons in the nudi
torium to witness what seemed to
be a ceremony marked by aristro
cratic simplicity, devoid of the stiff
ness that usually accompanied such
functions, and an air of sincerity
and determination of purpose.
