LA GRANDE PASTOR PREACHES
BACCALAUREATE SERMON.

About Union Town.
Union, May 19. (Special) Dr.
Fyke of La Grande preached the
bacculaureate sermon Sunday night
. at' the M. E. church to a large an''
appreciative audience. The church
was beautifully decorated with plants
and flowers. The graduating class
cojisists of fifteen members nine girh
and six boys. This is one of the larg
est classes that has ever graduated
from the Union high school. Dr.
Fyke's subject "The Ideal Man" was
well chosen and ably handled. All
present pronounced it a masterly ad
dress. Rev. McLeod1 received a unanimou j
call to be pastor for the Presbyterian
church for the ensuing year. Mr.
McLeod has come to Union highly
recommended by other places where
he has served as pastor. The con
gregation are a unit to have him take
charge ' the work at this place.
The primary election Is over and
defeated candidates can now sleep in
peace while the lucky one is still
wondering if the other fellow will
beat him. Union turned out in good
ly numbers to vote and the ladiea
doing their full share. Quite a num
ter of the candidates did not even get
a vote.
Union beat Cove in the base ball
game on Sunday to the tune of seven
to ten in favor of Union. Different
members of the league will know
that Union is on the base ball map
for this year. A special train was
run over for the accomodation of
those wanting to go while several J
went oy auto. ,
. Quite a number from Union at
tended the "Brander" at Medical
Springs on Saturday and Sunday. It
is reported . that it was' g. big affair
and good crowds in attendance.
School closes with this week and
the "kids" arc happy. The 8th grade
and the seniors are already out and
the others will be turned out as they
complete their exams. -
Everyone is busy boosting for the
slock show. This is going to be the
big year. Plans are being made bv
tho different churches and lodges to
serve meals as well as the hotels.
Arrangements will be made to feed
everyone that comes so thnt no one
will go hungry. The -race t-aek, und
burns are being, fixed up so thnt
everything will be shipshape for the
big days. It will pay everyone to
come.
. Tho junior reception to the seniors
of the high school was given at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs on last
Friday eveni.itr. Son-e of the stidcnts
were unable to be present on account
cf sickness. The evening was spent
in amusements and delicious refresh
ments ware served.
Ed Cline is the proud owner of a
new Ford nuto. It is a two pas
senger car. Fred Ames has bought
a new fivo passenger Ford nuto. Un

M. I. A. Day was a perfect suc
cess from every standpoint. The sub
jects for story telling could not have
been better, and were well handled.
We want to thank all those who
helped to' make the day one of the
best in the annals of our work. Es
pecially we thank the park board for
the use of their grounds; the fair
board for the fair grounds and the
high school board for the gymna
sium. Without these appropriat
places we would have been handicapped.
We also extend our appreciation to
the judges, Mrs. Vincent Palmer,.' E,
Z. Carbine of La Grande and
Osborne Richins of Union for their
kindly services in the story telling
contest.
Also the Observer for the thorough
manner in placing before the public
our plans for our annual field day
thus helping our friends to meet

tal from the north by the men under
Carranza.and Villa and from the
south by Zapata.
A battle there is predicted. He
