In the language of an old politician,
who has since passed to his long
home, "the people yesterday voted
just as they pleased."
While the percentage of votes was
entirely too light, the ones who did
vote seemed to know about what they
wanted.
On . the face of the returns Dr.
Withycombe has been nominated for
governor by Republicans. . This calls
to mind one jof the prettiest campaign
speeches in favor of a candidate we
; have ever heard in all of our lives.
It was a few days before the primary
that Robert Withycombe, son of the
i nominee, came over to La Grande to
say a few words :in behalf of. his
father:
"If everyone only knew my daddy
a3 I know him he would get all the
votes." said Robert, "for he is the
, best man jn all the world."
And the sincerity of purpose the
' pure love of son for father shone out
- so strong that there could be no mis
take as to the meaning of thpse
words.
Evidontly a good many people of
Oregon knew Dr. Withycombe, prob
ably not so well as does his son Rob
Well enough that they are
willing to entrust the business of this
great state to him or four years.
