In 'the last issue of the Elgin Re
corder Editor Henry in a two col
umn editorial urged the nomination
of L. Denham for representative on
the Republican ticket, which can be
found no fault with whatever for L.
Denham is a citizen of Elgin and a
high class gentleman worthy of sup
port. " But the Recorder views with
alarm the possibility of Mr. Sargent's
. nomination. In this we cannot agree
with our neighbor, for the nomination
of W. B. Sargent would be far from a
calamity.1 In our opinion this county
is to be well represented with either
Mr.' Sargent or Mr. Denham or Mr.
Busk. But as the Recorder has dwelt
so heavily on the desire not to see
Mr. Sargent win it is'but fair to this
man who is well known' in Union
county to state that for ability and
tenacity ; of purpose Mr. Sargent
stands in 'the fore rank. When he was
chosen "councilman here,; just before
s the commission form of government
was adopted we always found him on
. the right side. His fights were right
eous fights and his ability was ap
parent in directing the lawmaking
body out of the wilderness many

JOHNS IS COMING MAN
. CHARLES A. JOHNS, candidate for Governor
in the Republican primaries of May 15, has gained
ground so rapidly in the last few days of the cam
paign that his nomination is now conceded. It is
predicted by political wiseacres that he will carry
Portland and Multnomah County by a large ma
jority. Mr. Johns is the originator of a platform
promising sharp reduction in taxes, a big cut in the
expenses of state government, and the abolishing
of all useless state boards and commissions, and this
slogan has become the campaign cry of several
other candidates. His straightforward talks to
thousand of voters, his promises of economy and a
business administration have won friends and votes
for Mr. Johns at every stage of the campaign.
Knowing his untarnished reputation for keeping
his promises, clerks and employees of useless state
boards and commissions are opposed to his nomin
ation, because his platform means what it says and
he stands on his platform..
Mr. Johns has made a clean campaign, free
from mudslinging and incriminations. His forceful,
convincing addresses at Republican rallies through
out Multnomah county have been the chief drawing
card of these meetings. .
Republicans throughout Oregon concede that
his nomination in May means a Republican victory
