Dry Farming Versus Dry Feeding
With Alfalfa.
1 Facts relative to an experiment
with hogs at the Union experiment
station are given by C. C. Cate local
farming expert,' which will throw
some interesting Hght on a much
mooted question, as to whether much
grain feed is best for growmg hogs.
According : to this experiment, Mr.
Cate had the following to say: "Nine
hogs were put into one pen and were
fed on dry feed and allowed to eat
as much as they chose to eat . Nine
other hogs were weighed in and
placed in another pen beside the first,
but with an opening so that they
could have, access o alfalfa at all
times. ;
"After a period of five weeks, the
hogs were weighed. The hogs that had
j had both dry feed in unlimited quan
, titles and were allowed to graze on
grass weighed 187 pounds each, while
those that had gotten only dry feed
weighed but 148 pounds. This ought
to be convincing to any one raising
hogs that with grass they will do
, much better than when fed on dry feed
alone. Similar experiments will be
carried on from time to time in the

tion, as not all methods of feeding
will result the same for any given
locality." , .
He also states that his work in
fighting blight has been most suc
cessful, that many orchards have
been cleaned out altogether and that
those which have not yet been in
spected will come under his official
notice and be cleaned out or grubbed
out ; i 1 ' . '
His report on the fruit situation is
somewhat encouraging, inasmuch as
he gets over a great portion of the
valley and has ample opportunity to
inspect f rilit in every section of the
valley. A detailed ' report ; of his
work for a period of several months
will appear in an early issue of this
