Roberts contributes some Interesting data on the discovery of Hot Lake so near to our doors,' and so wonderful In its health restoring pro perties. The article is full of the early history of this valley and by reason of its worth, will be interst ing to those who love to be well in formed about the country in which they live. Says this letter: A recent newspaper article in re gard to that wonderful freak of na ture, Hot Lake, gives the reader a rather mistaken idea of the place, it seems to me. It was never used by the Indians or other aborigines as a sanitary resort in early times and was not known by human beings until 1861, as evidenced by the conditions surrounding ttat wonderful p;ace at the time that An gus McKay and I happened that way in July of that year. In July, 1861, a small party of five left Walla Walla Valley to go out on the plains to meet our friends, who were coming to join us in that new settlement of the Northwest. Arriving in Grand Ronde Valley, we found it a virgin meadow, with no track of man since the previous immigration of 1860 had passed through. Having started earlier than neces sary, for the purpose of prospecting and looking a little at the country, we stopped several days in this beau tif ul valley and traveled over and examined every cove and every place of interest, naming streams and mountains and lakes. On one day Mr. McKay and I made ! a trip around the valley to the east and south. Leaving the old immv grant road where it comes down the great hill near what is now called Ladd Canyon, we skirted the foot of the mountains lying to the east. The valley comes to the foot of this range of hills as a wet and swampy meadow, and the mountains rise very abruptly and very rocky, so we made our way along at the edge of the swamo and the rocks, and there was no indication of a trail of any kind Indians never make trails except to lead from place to place, from camp to camp, or from camp to fishing ground. Proceeding along the valley six or eight miles we were confronted with a large bunch of willows or rather a fringe of willows along the hillside that seemed to extend out into the meadow swamp and around a small lake. We dismounted and led our horses up onto the hillside. No trail not a rock disturbed. We turned and ! looked over the valley and we observ ' ed a small luke of about one or two 1 acres, sutrounded by a fringe of willows. The lake seemed to be disturbed or boiling with steam or smoke arising. As we stood contemplating the scene a strong smell of sulphur was driven by us. I then remarked to Mr. Mc Kay: "That is a hot sulphur lake. That was the name we gave it and I think that was the first time it was seen by white men and named. We I were mapping the country as we ! traveled over it, and my map of the valley shows that this hot sulphur lake was duly located and named, and I dare say that is the first time ever did appear on paper, but the story of the discovery has been print ed in newspapers over. 50 years ago. as the story of that desperate and foolhardy trip was duly published in the local papers upon our return.
