I am very glad to take advantage
at last, of your kind invitation to
write to my friends through the Ob
server, although there is so much to
ay that I hardly know where to be-

our trip across the continent with

is like.

It would be quite a liberal educa
tion just to live in Boston if one could
find time to take advantage of the
opportunities offered. Among the
free attractions are: the sermons and
lectures in the large churches, music
and dramatic recitals, museums and
art exhibitions, and lectures at Har
vard, Boston Public Library, the Low

places. The best talent the country
affords may of course, be enjoyed at
the theaters, symphony, and grand
opera.
In this, the newer part of the city,
the streets are of fair width but very
irregular. In the older sections, it
ii literally true that the streets grew
up along the footpuths leading to The
Common. If one wishes to loose all
sense of direction, I know of no "bet
ter place than some parts of Old Bos
ton. The streets run at all angles
to each other; some are very short
and end in all sorts of unexpected
places, or else change their names
as they are crossed by another street.
In the slum districts, they are often
no wider than an ordinary alley.
The foreign population has large
ly overrun the older residence dis
tricts. The question of one race
crowding out another is just a ques
tion of which is willing to live in
the lenst space and the people are

the famous Harvard buildings and
museums, the Elm under which Wash
ington first took command of the
American army, the homes of Long
fellow and Lowell, the site of the
"Village Blacksmith" shop and sev
eral famous churches. Salem is only
a short distance away with its House
of Seven Gables, its association of
literary men, and of witches. A visit
to Concord and Lexington is a popu
lar trolly or motor trip.
One of the most striking features
of Boston is its many old churches
which have held their places crowded
in among the modern buildings in the
busiest parts of the city. It seems,
sometimes, that they almost bid one
stop amid all the hurry and '"ustle
to consider, what things endure. In
the churchyards adjoining, are to be
found the graves of half the famous
men in American history.
