In the Northwestern states the ranchmen are giving much attention to the introduction of swine. This is true of all the Northwestern states, particularly the Western Dakotas, Montana, Washington Oregon. This move is certainly a step in the right direction. Pork at $8.00, per hun dred live weight is certainly better than wheat at 70 cents per bushel. But there is a right and a wrong way of going into poik raising. Persons who are not familiar with the business are pretty certain to take the wrong way. At least they are quite as apt to take the wrong methods as the method that is judicious and right. What is meant by the, wrong method ? It means first, that farmers are generally of the opinion that they must purchase high bred sows or sows that are purely bred, and it means second, that foundation stocks may be brought in that will bring hog cholera iwith them. The lack information on these two points going to cost the ranchmen dearly all the Northwestern states. When choosing foundation sows, is hot essential that they shall be purely bred or even highly graded unless the ranchman is going to pro duce nure bred swine for breeding I- does not matter how mixed the breeding. But it does matter that the sows shall have good conformation Good conformation means a long body and enough of length of limb to make the sows active as grazers during the season of grazing. It does not matter much what the blood compon ents are, providing the conformation is as stated above. Mixed blood ele ments are advantageous, rather than prejudicial, for the reason that the more mixed the blood elements on the side of the dam, the more rapid will be the improvement when such dams nre mated with pure bred sires of any breed. This is a lesson that it is to be feared not many ranchmen have learned and it is a lesson which they are slow to learn. The idea is nl most universal that the breeder must begin with high grade sows. As a rule he will succeed later with low grade sows, because of the less cost. But he must give attention to the selection of lone bodied sows. This l.vill insure the production of relative ly large litters and of good bacon production in the progeny. It should be remembered that with sows of mixed breeding improvement ccmes chiefly from the sire if purely bred. The more mixed the breeding of the dam, the more surely will the progeny resemble the sire. As mar kets of the future will give the pre ference to a sire of the bacon breeds, as the Yorkshires or the Tanworth. It is peculiarly unfortunate that hog cholera should be brought into Northwestern states. It might have been kept out of these. It was not there originally but it has been broucht there. Hog cholera is al ready in the Judith Basin. It is in other portions of the Northwest. It s there because it has been brought there. There was no necessity for bringing it. Due precaution would liave kept it out, but evidently due precaution was not exercised or it would not have been introduced. It will not avail to say that t.-.e climate f those states is so pure that it will lot nurse hog cholera. It is no more mre than the climate of Great Brit ain and yet hog cholera is plentiful there. Hog cholera is a germ disease. will come into any country into hich the germs are carried, and it ill flourish there howsoever pure e climate may be. When swine, therefore, are brought into any part of the Northwest, let those who bring them make absolutely sure that they carry them in properly disinfected cars. These two precau tions taken, they need not bring in hog cholera. The ranchmen of the Northwest must not imagine that the pure air of that region will give them immun ity from hog cholera. It will not, where the germ la brought in but it may lessen the mortality. They must not conclude that the foods which may grow will be a safeguard. These will lessen the mortality, but they will r.ot prevent the Introduction of hog cholera. When it comes it is brought through the medium of some agency, and usually due precaution will pre vent it from coming. . The Evening Observer on sale at Newlin Book store and the Club.
