The examination car officers of the
0. W. system have been here for
about three weeks examining men of
the second division. They are about
through with the work and will leave
tonight for Waiia Walla to continue
the work of instructing and examin
ing men of the Spokane division.
The work at this point has been
complete and satisfactory, "For," said
Mr. J, D. Mathewson, "we have in
structed and examined 515 men of
this division during our stay, and the
results have been gratifying. -Since
our work began the 1st of January
of this year we have had 1,400 men
in the" car, all of whom have passed
satisfactory examinations with the
exception of two men.
"On this division we examined 98
brakemen both freight and passenger,
42 conductors, both passenger and
freight, 94 engineers of both depart
ments of transportation, 88 firemen
and 191 yardmen, agents, operators,
track foremen. '
"We find all of the men well versed
in the rules which show they are
railroading. Of course men will dif
fer ns to the interpretation of some
of the rules and for this reason we
make these periodical trips to ascer
tain this variance of opinion and to
correct wrong impressions. It is
nart of the great gosrtel of 'Safety
first,' worked out by the officials of
the road to reduce to a practical min
imum the possibility of accidents and
make travel aas safe as location, and
equipment and human ingenuity com
bined will permit.
Mr. Matheson was assisted by Wm
Freemen, passenger conductor of the
tirst division runmng out or rortiana,
and W. W. Wilson of Walla Walla,
Washington, the five "W" man road
maater of the Spokane division.
