Auto Club Takes Hold of Proposition : Elgin Anxious, With the request that the country highways be changed from the road nw leading over the rocky hills at the north end of the valley to a water grade along the Grande Ronde River, The Union County Automobile club will begin at once a campaign before the county court to ' convince that tribunal of the feasibility of the move ment. This comes at the request of Elgin people who have outlined a road that will relieve the arduous task of climb ing the rocky and muddy hills, shorten the distance between La Grande and Drink CAW1 Natural Mineral Otm-J Water and You'll Know the Joy of Living I Elgin by a mile and a half and in every way Improve the thoroughfare, according to the opinions ' of those who are enthusiastic for the change. It is understood the county court is perfectly willing to grant this change as soon as it is proven to them there is to be ' Had a better highway along the river than the one which now runs over the hill. "Elgin people have a very good way of encouraging good roads," said Joe Campbell, county road .man, to a re porter for the Observer yesterday. "They do very little talking about what they want to do and then they get in with their money and their la bor and assist in building the road." . Upon investigation it is found that Mr. Campbell is right in his conten tions.. The people of Elgin wish the public highway from the city to the cemetery improved and instead of holding public meetings for discussion of ways and means they started a peti tion praying everyone interested for a donation or either money or labor to assist in building the highway. As a result $500 was subscribed in a few hours. Then the people said to Mr. Campbell: "You are the official road supervisor of Union county. We want this road built under official super vision so that responsibility -will at tach to someone, and therefore we ask you to see that this road is prop erly constructed." Mr. Campbell will oversee the work and the people of Elgin will put in their money and their time. I remember hearing him tell how he and Mrs. Stevenson onre went to Paris for a pleasure trip.
