Leaving out of consideration the stilt unexplored portions of the arctic and antarctic regions and there are mil lions of squure miles of them there are many spots on this little globe of ours that bave yet to become familiar with the face of a white moo and to smile or frown upon the fearless and btmly pnthflnder( New Guinea Is one of the few coun tries that still present untrodden fields for the explorer, but there are a num ber of Islands that remain a mystery to the world ut large and that will proba bly so retmilu for many years to come. ' One of these isles of mystery Is Ti buron island, where not so long ago an sxplorer met bis fate. His name was Wayne, and be is suld to bave been a clever mining expert Wayne went across to Tiburon In October, and not a trace bas since been seen of bin), nor is It likely that bis fate will ever be known. He was warned of tbe dangers that were before blm. In spite of offers of double pay be could not get a soul to accompany him, so be crossed Hell's passage alone and, like all others who bave preceded blm, bas never come back. Tlbiirou is no lonely Island in savage Melanesia. It lies in the gulf of Cali fornia, separated from tbe Mexican mainland by only a few miles of salt water. Yet it remains one of the world's black spots. It has never yet been ex plored by white men. Its only inhab itants are a tribe of Indians who, arm ed wltb bows and arrows dipped In some unknown but deadly poison, sboot down all who try to land.' The expedition of 1879 vanished into the interior and was never seen again, and tbe same fate befell the party beaded by Professor Millies in 1904. There is only one otber island In all the world which can match Tiburon. and that is Malaytn in the Solomons. Match It that Is, in tbe way of sav agery. And even in Malayta there are white men on tbe coast Valuable plantations of cocoanuts and otber tropical produce bave been planted on the shores of Malayta, but Inland is a mountainous country covered with thick bush and. Inhabited by tierce tribes of cannibals. Gold Is believed to exist in tbe In terior of Malayta. and more than one expedition bas been organized to search for tbe precious metal. But tbe busb men. who steal noiselessly as serpents through the tropical forest, bnve wiped out every one of tbe explorers, and their smoke dried heads decorate the dark temples u tbe central mountains. Otber Islands there are which are as Impregnable as Tiburon and Malayta, but for different reasons. One sucb is Tromellu, a lonely spot of lund thirty miles north of Mauritius. It Is sur rounded by a terrific rampart of coral, which is fully 150 yards wide. A mile out on any side of the Island the sea Is froni'10.000 to 12.000 feet deep. The surf, . which always breaks on tbe rocky fence of this submarine moun tain top, makes landing practically Impossible. , Yet it was bere that In 1701 a French .transport was wrecked, and 110 sur vivors out of over 800 aboard got ashore alive. Of these, seven, all black women, were rescued In the year 1770 having by some amazing miracle kept life In themselves for a space of fif teen months, wltb no food but shell fish aud no drink but brackish water. In the year 1(!07 that famous navi gator, Henry Hudson, reported tbe ex istence of a rock Island 300 miles east of Grecnlnnd. It was named Jan May en. That Island was never seen again until the year 18(H). when a party of English people, among whom was Lord Dnfferln. caught a glimpse of It Then it vanished for another fifty years, to be seen once more in .Inly. 1910, by the tourists aboard tbe yacht ing liner Oceana. No one has ever set foot on Jan Mayen. No one Is ever likely to, for no navigator would willingly approach it It is tbe center of the thickest fogs on tbe surface of this planet, and from one year's end to another usually re mains totally Invisible. Botivet Island, in the antarctic, Is al most equally Inaccessible. It is the summit of a dead volcano, which rises steeply from Immensely deep water, and It has been slirhted only twice since Its discovery In 17H0. Once and once only has man set foot upon It A boat from the Germun ex ploring ship Valdlvla landed, but the people found exploration Impossible The rooky sides were not only of ap palling steepness, hut they were liter ally coated wltb smooth' ice. making climbing a matter ot impossibility Penronn' Weekly THISTLE We have it from' a spoon to the largest size ket tie.
